      Recurring Nightmare

My friend has recurring nightmares of being tortured and killed by mysterious figures she can't make out and she says she feels pain in the dream. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to break the cycle or for her to gain control of her nightmares. I honestly don't really have nightmares, so I have no experience with such things.

Your friend can learn to use this situation as a dream sign to get lucidity and use it to stop the torture and have nice lucid dreams. Using a mantra to remember the dream sign and thinking about it during the day can help, the more times she succeeds in recognizing this situation as a dream sign the more familiar she will get with the fact that being tortured means she's dreaming

She's become lucid in them before, but that didn't help her. I don't know if she's really interested in such things, and being lucid is completely different then having dream control. You can have one without the other. Also, she said last nights dreams were worse than usual, and typed them up. Here they are.

Nightmare 1: I can honestly say that I don’t remember falling asleep. I was talking to my friend and before I knew it, I was somewhere else. That somewhere else was pretty freaky. It was a fairly decent sized room with wooden floors and tiled walls. One wall was a bookshelf and I couldn't quite tell what was on them. On another wall, was a large flat screen TV (about 58”) which appeared to be off. Thinking that this was weird, I tried to get up but I found that I couldn't for some reason. Looking down, I was horrified to find that my wrists and ankles were bound by rope so I couldn't move. Of course, I tried to struggle and break free but I was only making my wrists bleed so I stopped. “You can’t break free.” A voice said from behind me. I turned my head but no one was there. “There’s no escape.” The voice said again, this time from in front of me. I whipped my head forward but again, no one was there. The TV suddenly turned on and I was suddenly looking at a live feed of myself. I’m not entirely sure of everything that happened because this is where it became fuzzy and disorienting. I remember feeling a stab in both hands and seeing jagged knives erupting through them. Something then stabbed at my gut and twisted then started moving upwards, ripping through my body. I screamed and thrashed my head back in extreme agony. The amount of blood and pain combined, started making me dizzy and I slowly felt myself losing consciousness. Almost like someone or something was watching me, my eyelids were pinned to my forehead so that I was forced to keep my eyes open and watch the screen. I continued screaming and crying as blood poured from me and I heard it dripping onto the floor. From the corner of my eye, I noticed another blade coming for my throat and right as it made contact with my skin, I woke up.

Nightmare 2: So here again, I found myself asleep against my will. This time was different. Rather than being in a room, I was in the forest. Tall black pine trees towered above me and their roots were about a half a football field in length. Or at least the ones that were coming from the ground. Confused, I started walking to try and get out of there of course. It was dark and dank with very little light. I stumbled quite a bit and eventually, a small cabin appeared out of nowhere. Throwing caution to the wind, I immediately headed towards it. Upon reaching the door, I noted how it was suddenly halfway open. Thinking it was coincidence, I opened it and started looking for a phone. I tripped yet again this time scraped my knee in the process. Standing up, there was a door cut into the floor so I opened it. My curiosity peaked and I jumped inside. The walls felt like they were made of stone and I used my hands to guide myself along. At some point, it started to smell like iron and rotting meat and soon the walls felt slimy and wet. Still trying to work out what it was, I came upon a door which I opened. The room had a small light bulb swinging from the middle of the ceiling and I was shocked upon the grotesque scene that I had stumbled upon. Chunks of rotting meat were strewn across the floor. Looking to the walls, giant pieces of skin were nailed to the wall and blood coated literally everything. The walls, the ceiling, the skin, the flesh. I timidly started walking forward, as to why I don’t know, and came upon a body. I couldn't tell what gender it was because it was so mutilated but I think it was female. Her eyes were missing as were her hands and chunks of her legs. Her mouth had been cut back into a large smiled. Not like the Joker though, no this literally stretched from ear to ear with blood coating everything. Again, something strange happened and I blacked out or something. When I came to, I found myself in the dead girls place, looking at the door I had previously come through. A dark figure started making their way toward me and when they came close enough, I realized that it was a young teenage boy. He looked about 16 or 17 with brown-green eyes. His hair was covered by a black hat and he wore a black shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes. He leaned down and whispered something to me but I can’t remember what it was. He then stood and found a knife and started skinning me alive. I screamed in agony but of course no one would hear me. After he’d skinned half of my body, he started to take out my eyes. “I don’t want you to see yourself.” He said. That was a little weird but pain took over as my eyes were gouged out. “Come on now, I at least want you to smile. There’s no need to be so glum.” His voice was deep but had a nice sing song tone when he spoke. Losing consciousness, he slowly started cutting my mouth into a smile and that’s when I woke up.

If she isn't interested in lucid dreaming she can wake up after getting lucid, what works for me is trying to feel my real body and opening my real eyes but there are lots of ways of waking up when lucid. I hope it works for her because I know how horrible are recurring nightmares.
