      recurring dream themes

so i know people have recurring dreams and i know themes may be more common sometimes. i was just wondering why like for a month or a couple weeks you may not nessesarily have the same dream but have the same type of dreams. such as, for a couple weeks you may have sex dreams a lot or have dreams where you changed into your favorite animal or something. my dreams seem to cycle randomly through themes every so often and it doesn't seem to be related in any way to thoughts or feelings or anything i'm experiencing in real life. for example a few months back i"d dream almost every night for about four months of something to do with vampires. my dream control was lower and i couldn't change the theme of the dream. i could change what happened int he dream itself but not a certain thing like a vampire or more being in there somewhere. it happens with other things too and i wondered how to change it.

I have been having a lot of dreams about going camping with the Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts have not been on my mind at all since the last camp out a month and a half ago.

It would be awesome if we can learn more about this phenomena. I think many times, our brains produce the type of dreams we need instead of the type we want. I often dream about things that I don't like when I'm awake. Why dream about something I had no interest in while awake? This seems key in producing nightmares - prolonged viewing of undesirable visuals.

I've made progress in forcing myself to dream about certain things, but often, I will dream about some inane element of my attempt. Like instead of dreaming about life in Middle Earth, you dream about playing a video game about it. There does seem to be a general pattern to all this.

I think reoccurring dream elements are key to understanding it better too.
