In either case really. The first by an evolutionary outlook we had no choice, on the other hand we could have manifesred love over the years and turned it into something we really don't need. An illusion like so many other things are. But you mix an illusion with an aspect of a human emotion and you have one pretty strong facade.

I watched a whole special about this on the Discovery channel. They talked alot about love being a feeling manifested as means for human's to stay together and procreate. Just like babies are cute...so we don't abandon them at birth and want to love and nuture them. There is always something more to what we "feel" physically than meets the eyes. This has come about from thousands of years of evolution.

Sex without love is very risky, I agree with the risk of unconsciously giving something emotionally away. "Your Body is God's temple." If you're not religious, it at least implies how important usage of your body is.

What if you have anonymous one-night stand, and ruin the sexual exclusivity for a potential next husband/wife/mate of your partner? (if it is something you decide to treasure) You never know if regret will uproot later.

Though I do not know the exact basis of permanent monogamy, but it seems to be the safest standard according to modern mankind.
