      Sour grapes.

I was somewhat unsure if this should go here or R/S, as it sort of straddles the two. I put it here because, although it's laced with religious references on the surface, at it's core it's really a philosophy about our world; accordingly, I simply wanted this to be a philosophical discussion rather than a religious discussion. Obviously, if need be that will fall to the discretion of the mods. Cheers.

And the angel of the lord led me into the belly of the holy mother, a chamber black as pit; but I felt no fear, only comfort, for I was as a child in the womb. And she begged me "Hear through yonder portal, which looked upon the heavens, and behold! a morning angel!" She ascended slowly from far beyond the horizon, her light like a heavenly finger pointing the way, and on yonder wall she traced for me a path which led me five directions, eight winters to east.

And behold! As my feet landed firmly upon the vital winter of the second storm, there appeared before me a heavenly star, a holy virgin, the bringer of life and breath, and she spoke unto me saying, "Fear not the movement of the heavens above, or the earth below; for change is what we are, my child. Righteous are those who look up and sway with the wind, who look down and dance with the shifting of the soil, who swim with the movement of the tides, who seek the truth around them, and discover that we are, and have always been, in paradise, the reflections of heaven on earth." Amen!

And she spoke again saying "Know, my child, that there is no devil seeking to cause guilt nor harm to men; no evil save blind faith, ignorance, and the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change. Change, my child, change is in the heavens, change is on this earth, change is all around us. And we are reflections of the divine; we must roll with these changes,
For we are these changes. Eyes wide open, we must look upon the heavens as a mirror; wide awake, aware, deeply breathing.

"And when the shit comes down, my child, you will be there, a true and holy survivor, to inherit the kingdom of god. You will rise above the rumbles of the unprepared to greet the new day, to drink from the sweet fruit of the vine, the water of life, the blood of the risen Christ, my child!

"Go now, son. Tell them all, the ignorant, the blinded by dogma,
blinded by faith, the doubters, the nay-sayers; tell them all, child, they can not see
the kingdom of God, they can not see paradise unfold before them, they can not drink from the chalice which holds the blood of Christ, the water of life, until they get right with Jesus! Until they get right with Jesus!"

So, what do you guys think of this philosophy?

To me, that's what it's all about. I've been pondering lately that we are, first and foremost, dynamic creatures. I only just stumbled upon this, but I particularly like this description of things.

But I'd like to hear some replies before I get too heavy into my own ideas. So what do you guys make of this?
      Just thought I'd share.

Maynard is such an amazing person.

I've always thought he meant that untill ya get right with Jesus was referring to accepting the truth about the messiah[s]: that there isn't one, there never was one and there never will be one.
That we are indeed the true master, and it's only though our understanding of this that we will find the promised land. Once this becomes a part of us, we can then let the world finally end.

I don't believe he has one preference over another when describing religious dogma, he may have used Jesus as it's just the easiest avatar to recognize.
Listen to this song: The Patient

Particularly he notes the fact that the essence of our world, and ourselves, is change. It's a fact of life, and the only way to cope with it is to embrace it. God knows I've learned this from experience, and through no trivial matter. We've got to be ready to accept change in our lives. We're always moving from one phase to the next, and we can't fight it. Particularly consider what he mentions that there is "no evil save...the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change."

Also, as with most Tool songs it's completely adaptable to interpretations other than those held by the writers, however my understanding of The Patient was that Maynard wrote it about the situation with his mother. You've piqued my interest though, what exactly were you referring to in the song?

If there were no rewards to reap,
no embrace to see me through,
this tedious path I’ve chosen here,
I certainly would’ve walked away, by now.
This is exactly what I was referring to.

Judith is another song about his mother with many interpretations.

      Many Tool songs
and some interesting interpretations by random people.

Dude, it's actually song lyrics from Puscifer, which is a side-band project of Maynard from Tool.

      Changes things, don't it?

Trust me, read it!! Maybe start with what Sassafrax posted above, which is very similar and once you've read that go back and read Supernova's OP. It's worth it.

Not really, that music doesn't appeal to me.

Although I have heard that thing Sassafrax posted before. Can't remember where right now.
I like that one. Except for the messiah bit at the end.

      I always hated Tool, lol.

I think it was because too many rednecks I knew liked them when I was turning away from metal in general. Apparently I have been depriving myself of some good stuff, I really appreciate this.

Post your thoughts, Supernova, I'm interested.

That's the unspoken requirement of every tool fan, though.
