There are quite a few parents in America who pays their for their children's college. My parents taught me that things weren't just handed to you. By the time I was 16, i had bought my first car and paid cash for it... I paid for my own gas and insurance as well. I was still able to put some aside here and there and continue to save for college. I have been working sense I was old enough to realize that if I don't do it for myself, no one else will. I was able to pay for college without having to take out loans. I have paid cash for everything. I have never used a credit card or borrowed money except for when I bought my house. I am debt free except for my house which should be paid off in around 4 to 5 years. I contribute all of this to God giveing the strength and discipline to work hard, save money etc... don't know why I got off on this rant. I guess I'm just tired of hearing people say their parents owe them this or their parents will not pay for that. My parents were well off but I had to earn money if I wanted stuff. Anyway, sorry about the rant

I see. Somehow I had the image that many parent's pay their offspring to the college in the States. If I have understood right there huge differences in the price of a semester depending on a college or university there.

Anyhow, I simply cannot understand families who feel some kind of guilt that one of their family is an atheist. Family shouldn't determine what you are and what you are going to be. I quess for some people an idea of losing family bonds is a tough call.
Jujutsu is the gentle art. It's the art where a small man is going to prove to you, no matter how strong you are, no matter how mad you get, that you're going to have to accept defeat. That's what jujutsu is.

I probably should have added that he came from a wealthy family, so they were fully able to. And that's what made the situation so devastating, the fact that they could lay such a major blow to his life because he wasn't a Christian.

I think it's more expensive to study there. Much more expensive.

Well I think they should have. But that's just my opinion I guess.

Actually i'm glad they didn't. made me appreciate college and getting an education that much more. If more people had to pay their own way through life maybe they wouldn't be spoiled or expect a handout

I would suggest sitting down with your parents and speaking to them about this in a calm manner and try not to get fired up. Good luck with your situation.
I agree with this point of view. It is understandable why parents would want their children to follow their same religion, but for it to be forced is messed up. You should sit down with them and tell them this.

I paid my own way through college. One thing that i saw going through college was those that paid for themselves did much better then those who had mom and dad fund it.
A parent is not required to pay for college, but it seems like an obligation to make sure that the children are some what financially prepared for their young adult hood. People that pay for college themselves will be more motivated and thus do better. Parents should have savings for their kids if they can afford it, but it doesn't need to be enough to cover the entire cost of a higher education. College isn't for everybody anyway.

There's nothing wrong with being an atheist. Most religions are so hypocritical and illogical, I don't understand how anyone can follow them.

Atheism is fun, being beholden to no great supreme being that can cast you into the fires of hell at his whim. You're free! Live it up, brah. Why waste your Sundays in church, when you could be sleeping in or having a generally good time? Seems pretty pointless to me, especially considering we really don't have any decent evidence for the existence of any sort of supreme being.

      LOL, that is so true.

It's also lots of fun to make fun of/argue with the bible thumpers and point out all the flaws in their logic xD

Ah, but the odds of there being any sort of divine creator at all, let alone the judeo-christian one that is widely accepted throughout the world, is infinitely small. Life is far too short to waste away in a church and fearing some great being. Also, if you take Occam's Razor to the whole picture, you can just about shave god and all the stuff that goes with him clean out of it.
Conclusion: I'll take my chances at this point.

I'm not saying the judeo-christian is the god... he's personally the one I believe in, but the only thing I believe in concretely, (as in with scientific reasoning) is Inteligent Design. I can buy into the big bang theory a little bit, but ID comes before even that.

Science led you to this conclusion? Good heavens...care to explain why you have tossed aside evolution?

I think the concept of evolution is very real. ID and Evolution can co-exist. I don't believe that man came from apes, though I do believe man might have evolved. (If only a little) We're simmilar species, but when something evolves, theres no cases of its primary form being on the earth at the same time.

WRONG. Stuff evolves from other stuff all the time, and the two species can exist at the same time, no problem. Common examples include viruses, as well as dogs and wolves.

Also, it is a common misconception that man evolved from apes. Rather, men and apes shared a common ancestor thousands of years ago that eventually split into the two separate and distinct races we see today. Also keep in mind that we share 50% of our DNA with a banana. Basically, all life is connected and can be traced back to a common ancestor billions of years ago.

Thats better thought out... I still have some issues with men evolving from tiny cells, I think that we were created differently by some sort of creator. Thats my belief, and yah I don't have any evidence to back it up.

Well, at least it's not hurting anyone...
Think of it as growing complexity...single-celled organisms are marginally more complex than a lump of organic matter, and the stuff they evolve into becomes more and more complex. Eventually, you end up with humans and other complex creatures.

Unless you pick a high-paying profession with relatively little schooling. Pharmacy is up on the board of such jobs. Also, if at all possible, it would be a good idea to get some college courses relevant to your major under your belt while still in high school. My school has a program like this, and it's a thing of beauty. If you should be so lucky, jump at this opportunity!
