For those who belief the earth is (12,000?) years old.

EDIT: For those who believe the Earth is (12,000?) years old

Let me first state that I know a majority of christians no longer believe this, but I had a good friend of mine once tell me the "Earth isn't millions of years old. Evolution is BS, etc." So in this thread, i'm going to cover her idea of the age of Earth. I am going to assume she believes what I recall being stated in the Bible. Remember though, this is just what I remember. If any of my information is wrong please correct me.

So I know some Christians believe the Earth is, I think, 12,000 years old. If I remember correctly it was 10,000 years before the coming of Christ which was stated?

Anyhow, let's say he created Earth.

This means anything Prehistory did not exist (before 10000BC). Then any artifacts we have before 10000BC must not exist, right? Wrong.

So let's say that 10000BC WAS when the Earth was created.
Our carbon dating has dated things prehistory. With the ideas of Noah's Ark, and other stories of the bible. It is possible a catastrophe of such amounts may have possibly skewed our carbon dating. Possibly, but I do not have enough knowledge to know if conditions of the sort could or could not change the half-life of an item.

I'm not sure if the belief is he created Earth or everything.

So let's say he created EVERYTHING 12,000 years ago.

How could this even be remotely possible? If we have observed objects near 18 billion lightyears away, it must take at least 18 billion light years to reach us.

Say he placed those objects there from the start.

Either way, even if it's only 12,000 years old and God placed materials there, we would not see it yet. So obviously the universe must be at minimum 18 billion years old. If it is, in fact, 12,000 years old, then we have SERIOUSLY messed up our research and light moves too damn fast.

Anybody care to respond to this question?

Never heard of a 12,000 year old mention. In the Bible, maybe, but not the Quran. Furthermore, I agree. If someone CAN confirm that the Bible says the earth was made 12,000 years ago, the printing press might have missed a few zeros or it really does clash with modern science.

I read the New Testament, and among the chapters I viewed, I did not find anything as such. Maybe I just don't remember it.
'The petals dance through the wind,
The crimson blood shimmers on the snow,
The shattered heart weeps of hidden sorrow.
And over a pure white sky,
      rises a black moon.'

I have never read the bible myself, so I did have to put the disclaimer I don't have much clue what i'm talking about. But I've heard 6,000 and 4,000 as well.

In any case, they DEFINITELY don't say 18 billion years.

I remember having an argument with a friend's mom over why the earth wasn't 4000 years old. I was twelve at the time.

Then any artifacts we have before 10000BC must not exist, right?
Apparently the devil put them there to test their faith. Fossils, too.

      It's "believe", btw.

I pick up a half-eaten copy of a book by Neil Gaiman, and decide this is all his fault.

Well if he did put fake artifacts and fossils and moved light through wormholes.., it worked. Lol.

      Right.

I still have yet to receive a real answer. I guess DV is not the place where people believe in this stuff.

Most Christians on this site are pretty liberal or modernist Christians.

Besides, anyone who thinks the earth is 4000 - 12000 years old probably isn't very open to lucid dreaming.

That is a good point, but you find new people all the time. Said friend who believes 12K years of earth was open to lucid dreaming.

Why so? You'd think they'd be more open to extraordinary stuff. Right?

The 4,000 figure simply comes from adding up all the stated times between events. For example, Adam died at 500 or whatever, had a sons at age X, Y, Z, they lived for 400, 500, 600 years, etcetera. They work it out like that.

yup. Although if I recall bible don't mention how many time took God (you can't interpret 7 days as 24hours*7) to create Adam, so the number 4,000 are the years that passed after Adam being created.

But yes, in nowadays, saying the world is only 12,000 years old is pretty stupid : |

Even if adam was created 6,000 years ago (4000 BC) That's still so horribly wrong as we have written documents from times well before that.

What if the world was created by God, but he waited till the Earth was cool enough before created Adam? o_O

But the he is the first man. Which, can't be true even if he did wait until Earth was cool enough cause men were around before him. Quite a few, actually.

That's the whole point: people do interpret these things literally. People think the world is 6,000 years old in the face of all evidence.

And jarrhead makes a good point too; it's not 6,000 years since the first man, either.

I'm surprised nobody's posted this yet.

To respond to the original post more substantively, if God created stars billions of lightyears away from us, what would be stopping him from just creating all the intervening light rays (i.e., placing them already in space and headed towards us) as well? He is God, after all.

But then you're in major trouble if you think the light rays really were set into motion billions of years ago. God's deliberate deception is no excuse!
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?
