Free Global Lucid Dreaming Research Database

      Hi guys,

I'm taking first steps towards creating a research database with (potentially) tens of thousands of nights of:
      Actigraphy data
      Sound intensity data
      Time in bed
      Time out of bed
      Total Sleep duration
      Dream markers
      Lucid Dream markers.

Currently there are 7000 users (+200/day), and (I estimate) over 70000 nights of data from all over the world is available.

How cool would it be to have such a database available, completely free, and with lots and lots of data?

The reason I'm posting this topic is that I'm not a database expert, nor a research expert, so if you have any thoughts on the subject of how to make this into reality, please post them here, or join the open source project to make this happen (I'm in the process of figuring out how to upload the source code). Furthermore, I'm getting a full time job (mobile development, yay!), so I'll be able to spend a lot less time keeping this project running.

Data will come from the users of the Lucid Dreaming app, currently a typical night looks like this, when plotted

That's incredible! I'd be really interested in the results, and the data you extract from this could be potentially useful. I tracked my dream statistics for over a year, although not in the categories you're measuring. I'm not sure how one would calculate those (such as restful vs. non-restful sleep and the exact occurrence of dreams), but it sounds very interesting for future law of large numbers applications and whatnot. I wish you the best of luck with this project and hope that your results can further dreaming research!

If it helps, the last significant data I recorded was on 12/31/10. Here were my results up to that point:

      Total dreams: 770
      Total days: 372
      Total lucids: 12
      Dreams per day: 2.081
      Lucids per day: 0.03225
      Days recorded: 225
      Dreams per recorded day: 3.422
      Lucids per recorded day: 0.0533
      Dreams per lucid: 64.166

      Dreams this year: 48
      Days this year: 7

Dreams per day last year: 1.978
Dreams per day this year: 6.857

      Sounds cool man!
I might be getting an Android soon, so I really hope this works out, and I wish you the best of luck with this!

Awesome. You should really keep working with IAmACoder or whatever his name is.
I know you had an EEG thread where you were talking with him recently. You two could make an awesome team.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Not sure if I could help except maybe with design if you need it. And on that note, the colours you're using are too confusing. There's too many similar colours which makes it hard to differentiate between them.

Wow, congrats on the job bro!

And wow. Thank you for your contribution to the search for enlightenment. It will not go unnoticed.

@tommo: You can call me "I Am". I must confess that I felt a hint of sadness at Ev's new job. I was also hoping the universe would conspire a more timely collaboration.

Anyway, I shotgun the file extension of any database exports: LSD!

The following optional fields might come in handy:
      Date of Birth
Date of Data (to work out age)
      Dream Clarity (1-10)
      Gender
      Race
      Drugs[]
Variables[] (random variables that could have contributed to the dream)

Hey guys, it's great to see interest in this! I've just finished the format of data upload, although it is rather rudimentary. Just to clarify - all dream markers are added by people themselves (hopefully, immediately upon awakening). Maybe by analyzing a large number of markers occurring in the middle of the night, some kind of a correlation may be found between actigraphy/audio data and dream activity. The additional information may be very beneficial to researchers. Maybe if it is combined with the dream journal type of app, it may be even more useful!

This is a very nice information! Let's hope your number of lucids will increase!

The database would allow multiple ways to look at data and show when people report their dreams / LDs most often. For example there may be a larger number reported Xhours after going to bed. Studies like that have been done with a small number of volunteers, but not with thousands of people spanning multiple days/weeks/months. This information may help people who want to time their techniques properly.

There may be other potential discoveries. Because all data is standardized to GMT/UTC time, it would be possible to see how dreams are happening around the world. Maybe there's a pattern of how people become lucid? Additionally, since all times are standardized from 12PM to 12 PM, centered at midnight, combined with the time zone information, it may be possible to find out the most beneficial time to go to sleep for dreaming.
