I never replace letters with numbers and symbols. Unless I'm using it to illustrate a point.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a problem with this?

Sure i see the errors and mistakes, but its just a form of communication.

      Oh well.
Perhaps i don't value words as much as most people seem to...

Personally, when someone can't be bothered to write properly, I can't be bothered to read it.

I personally do not write in this form usually. I find it amusing to post this way on a thread where people complaining about it.
Do not try and bend the dream. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realise the truth.
      There is no dream.
Then you'll see, that it is not the dream that bends, it is only yourself.

Is it more intelligent to use more keystrokes to convey the same message? Perhaps those of us who type full words on the internet are being left behind by the next evolution of language.

Yeah I suppose if things progress at this rate, we'll be f-ing telepathic within a decade.

That's like saying people should talk however they want to. Seriously, try to imagine somebody speaking like that. How well would you be able to understand them? Even if you could understand them, would you feel annoyed at all because they can't be bothered to speak well?

That's not evolution, that's anal rape. Keystrokes don't matter. It doesn't matter that this is all text. The fact remains that this is still a language. Does somebody who speaks like benTENDO's example sound intelligent?

I'm not a huge grammar nazi, but there's only so much I can tolerate. The basic "u" and "r" are pushing it, but at least it's still understandable if that's all they change. I don't even care if people use the shift key or not.

It's not just about spelling, either. Some people absolutely refuse to use any punctuation or even dare press the "enter" key once, just as our friend iq183 demonstrated. Maybe we would have thought he was just a little bit less crazy if he had been capable of writing intelligently. A college would laugh at a letter typed like that and immediately trash it.

Me and my brother do talk like that, although it is a joke.
We randomly add the sound of "z" on the end of words and actually say "lol" all the other words which I wrote in that sentence is the way which we would pronounce them.

ME: "hey bruz wotz up yo?"
HIM: "nm g, just chillin in teh kribz"
      ME: "I iz 1337"

People do talk however they want to, people have been talking in slang since quite some time ago, I don't see how it is different today.

It always irritates me when someone leaves a word out in a sentence or says you where your should go, or the is instead of am "I is poor" like "u a lucid dreamr?' I don't know why that bugs me . But yeah I play runescape, and everyone in that game about irritates me with the way they speak, it just makes me feel like they don't care. I always type with my best spelling wherever I am.

And yes lol a friend of mine and me actually sound out words like lol and lmao.

It sounds to me that you have a problem with street slang, because that can be really hard to understand if you don't know the lingo. Welcome to the streets, sister.

But for me, slang is one of those things about language that I love. It amuses and interests me. When I started going to college, I met people from different places who had slightly different slang from me (or no slang at all.) Most of us are from Southern Ontario and it's amazing to see how the slang differs from area to area. And when I started chilling with these people, our slangs ended up combining. It's just one of the more interesting aspects of language for me.

One of the best thing about ant self-respecting internet forum is seeing people who come in talking like this, get slapped around and then leave talking in ways other people can understand.
