      The counting and talking in your head is dumb and it will only keep you awake. Don't do it if you want to lucid dream.

      It sounds like after you "quit", you might have reached the very beginning of SP. But you snapped yourself out of it by focusing on the sensations too much.

      of course there are techniques. Ignore that stupid ass below you. One that I really like is playing some low white noise when your are drifting off and performing your wild. Focus only on this noise. Do not think about the WILD or any hypnogogic lights or any of that crap. Just focus on the noise. Then when you DO start seeing hypnogogic lights, imagine a scene you want to be in. It will probably appear, and then step out of your physical body into the dream world.
      There's lots of other techniques too, you should do trial and error and find the one that suits you best
