Hi, welcome to Dreamviews!
REM (rapid eye movement) is a fairly common occurrence in WILD attempts; I haven't experienced it myself, but many others have. Your eyes are supposed to be closed because any visual stimuli, such as opening your eyes and looking around the room, can snap you out of SP or whatever hypnagogic imagery you may be seeing. It will signal to your mind that you're still awake, and stop the process of falling asleep. REM sometimes happens though, and there's not much you can do about it. But you can take steps to ensure you won't wake out of the SP if you do open your eyes - you can wear a sleeping mask, and make sure all the sources of light in your room are gone. The room should be as dark as possible, preferably pitch-black. Not everyone experiences hallucinations (auditory, tactile, or visual) when they're close to or in sleep paralysis, so don't rely on that to confirm whether you're in that state or not. You're definitely close, though. Just keep relaxing deeper.
Oh, I moved this thread to the Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams - WILD subforum. =)
