      Breathing in SP

Hey, when I'm fully relaxed and I enter SP I usually get a falling sensation. Whenever I'm in SP there's a point where suddenly my breathing is turned waaay down, my chest is heavy and I'm kind of fighting for air.

After a moment of struggling with my breathing I finally get it under control, but I'm not sure if this knocks me out of SP. During this time my focus is switched back to thinking about my body slightly, but my mind's eye is still really phased out, as if I'm looking at something really far away (hard to explain, but I feel this way when attempting a WILD and getting far in).

Am I supposed to continue with the struggle to breathe for my transition to a lucid dream?

That can be one of the most difficult aspects of going up against SP consciously. It does some crazy shit to you, and if you're conscious you just don't know what to do with it. I've definitely experienced the off-beat breathing problems when entering SP, and my reaction to it has probably affected the outcome of my success in various different attempts. I think you have to just wing it, and hope your brain doesn't realize you're still conscious by the reactions you put out during the SP initiation stage.

Remember, what we do in WILD is attempt to trick our body/brain into proceeding into sleep after it "assumes" we're unconscious. If we give a sign that we're conscious, it will abort. I assume that's what happened with your example. All you can do is trial and error.

Yeah, thanks. I'll try again with it in a WBTB...trial and error a bit, though after I give your technique a shot as it seems really good.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for someone to come back and reply on my thread that they've had success, because I know that it works extremely sufficiently for me. Hopefully people will be able to use the method and tweak it as they wish to get the best results from it. Good luck, and hopefully you come back with good results.

I've almost overcome the anxiety I experience over the physical paralysis, but I have just as hard a time dealing with the breathing problems as you do.

Basically I just have to calm down... I think the problem is that you detect that off-beat breathing and you panic, causing yourself to hyper-ventilate to a point.

Just keep in mind that your breathing is being regulated by a very advanced biological computer that knows EXACTLY how much air you need; you're not going to suffocate.

I noticed many many years back when observing someone who is sleeping, the breathing is way different than when they are awake. The breaths you take are could be a little bigger, but i did notice that you hold that breath in about 2-3x as long as you do when you are awake!

Very good point. It's hard to realise sometimes, but I guess we can reassure ourselves that we'll be fine, thanks for the response.

This links well with the last post. I hadn't really thought about that. It's amazing how the body works during sleep.

Thanks for the replies, I'll conquer this breathing in no time.

That happened to me the first time I tried it! I thought hyper-ventilating is something that happens when you go into Sleep Paralysis. The problem is that after I get there, and it all happens, my body goes numb but I still can't go Lucid!

BTW, should you breathe heavily, or breathe normally, even after your heart rate is freaking out and you are out of breath?

I was breathing heavily to cope, but I was trying to get my focus off of my breathing, and eventually you will and totally forget about that.

When you get to this stage next time I've heard to just block out all thoughts (even the one where you know you're getting really close). Once you're in SP you'll find it much easier to get that total internal focus, forgetting about your body.

Eventually you'll get to a transitional phase where those swirling colours and blobs become stronger and become images, and then a dream.

I have been practicing getting into SP and I know the feeling pretty well (love the falling feeling). But this was only at the time of just going to bed, it works so much better after waking up in the middle of the night.

Thanks, by the way, by Hypnagaugic imagery, do people mean when they close their eyes and random colors and stuff pop out everywhere? I've been searching for what it is but nothing is clear enough.

Yeah, that's it. The colors are what you see first, I get random swirls and flashes. After that it gets more vivid.
