      What am I doing wrong?

      Hey Everyone!

I've been trying to do some WILD's for the last few days, and even doing a couple of WBTB's and going back to sleep keeping in mind that I'm about to go to sleep and will stay lucid and use mnemonics.

Last night I laid down around 12 AM after listening to a 30 minute youtube video with subliminal messaging telling me I will stay lucid etc. After that I listened to a 1.5 hour long youtube video that is meant for listening to while falling asleep, and once you're asleep it continues playing and then after about an hour of listening it starts with the messaging.

I listened to it and tried to keep very still, and moved only a few times just to stay comfortable. I had headphones on and became very drowsy. I was more of put into a trance after a while of listening, and kept my thoughts on falling asleep lucid. Slowly but surely I had VERY short "dreams" here and there, but they only lasted about 30 seconds to 2 minutes. This only happened once or twice.

All of my experiences trying to do WILD's I've never had any sort of HI or heard anything, or had any enhanced visualizations. It just feels like going to bed as usual, but keeping still.

After a while, the 1.5 hours of listening was complete, and the video stopped... but I was still awake, I didn't fall asleep. I then felt very refreshed and awake and found it very hard to get to sleep. After a while I just got up and went to the bathroom and got some water then came back. I fell asleep in about 15-20 minutes.

I had a dream which I journaled here on the site. Nothing lucid, and it didn't feel like anything special. What am I doing wrong? It seems like WILD'ing is such a hard to explain phenomenon that nobody has every REALLY explained. I've read several "How to WILD"'s threads on here... and I do everything, but it seems I just can't do it, I don't get any vibrations, anything unusual, it just feels like I'm keeping still and relaxed, but that's it.

      Any help?

      It's greatly appreciated, thanks!

That was a nice try. But it sounds like you didn't read this WILD It starts with mental preparation, as it's not really enough just to stay still. In fact, that's not really a requirement. If you move without paying any attention to it, you can do it.

Audio may keep you too awake. I have never tried WILDing with that. I really believe that everybody should start with basic WILD method and adjust it only after many attempts, when they gain understanding of how it goes.

You don't need any sensations for a WILD. Sometimes you get some, othertimes you get something else, or even nothing.

The goal is to fall asleep, while keeping your mind awake with help of some brain entertainment. Most widely used are counting and mantras. I personally prefer mantras.

Please check out the above tutorial and compare to your attempts. Good luck

"I've been trying to do some WILD's for the last few days" <- This.

It's sort of like saying I have been trying to learn to play this song "Through fire and flames" on guitar for a few days and ....

So well you are not doing anything wrong, you have just not practised for long enough.

      Basics:
If you want to learn to play song you start by looking at the basics which is chords and scales, in WILDing you learn relaxation and mantaining awareness.
      Advanced:
Then you want to learn the different riffs and solos, in WILDing this could be for example passively observing what's happening without thought and analyzation.

And if you look at it this way you'll see that a few days is not enough to learn either the basics or the advanced.

So what you should do is to not analyze and think about your practise in too much detail in the beginning, and just do.

There is no try, trying is expecting and hoping for something. There is only do, and that's how you learn, and when you have learned, you can analyze.

So you see you need to have a long term perspective on this.

And when you look at this in a longterm perspective, the result like having a lucid dream is not the important part, that's short term perspective.
When you look at it in a longterm perspective you find joy in each LITTLE progress you make such as: I was able to stay aware longer for this time, I have practised for a few months now or I take action and practise every day.

So that is when the result will come, when you don't focus on it.

If you focus on change you will get result, but if you focus on result you will never change. - That's the paradox.

I am currently going through the exact same process as you and if you read my Dream Journal you will see that I am not as focused on getting the experience itself.
I am more focused on the steps that lead me there, like mantaining awareness, what to do while relaxing, the mind aware body asleep state or the fact that I practise every day. I trust that this eventually will give me the understanding of how to get an experience at will, but that goal is a long term goal.

I was once a beginner and this is the biggest misstake most people make, including me. They focus on the longterm goal and expect to achieve it in a week.
It's good that you ask for advice and know how to analyze, but when I saw that you were a new member I thought it was a good idea to make you aware of this information.

And that is why I share this with you, to save you the 2-3 years it took me to come to this realization. What you do with it is up to you.

But it basically comes down to this: "If you expect to change and learn, you need to go through a journey and if you just continue to practise every day for let's say 10 years! It's impossible to fail! Let's say you practise playing the guitar every day for 10 years how can you possibly fail? Even if you had no hands and practised with your feet instead, you would still freaking succeed in learning to play the guitar. It's works the same way for lucid dreaming and the mindset you should have to make this endurable and possible is what I described above.

      Good luck!

I did it!! Thanks so much for the feedback guys!

@gab - I read all the lessons in that link you gave me, very useful, very helpful. Thanks so much! I doubt I would have had a WILD this morning without that. If you'd like to read a bit of the INSANEness I experienced, read below. (Literally thought I was gunna die)

@MasterMind - You're absolutely right, I'm glad that I had this one successful WILD, because now I know that I can do it, and I know that with more practice, and more time, I can become a master at it. Maybe in 3-5 years I'll be posting about how I incubated a dream with me sitting on a beach on mars sipping strawberry daiquiris! Thanks for the information and insight! Read below to see my INSANEness I experienced.

You can read the full dream by clicking here and you'll be taken to my DJ entry, but for now, here's just what I went through in a short excerpt from my DJ:

Operation Homicide Ep. 102: I was laying in bed after my WBTB and trying to keep still and relaxed. I couldn't help but move a couple of times to stay comfortable, and eventually simply rolled onto my side. After laying there for a little while I felt myself slipping into sleep. I was very aware of myself and of the fact I was trying to perform a WBTB WILD. As I was laying there about to fall asleep I heard the most TERRIBLE noise in the world! It was such a loud screeching I thought I was about to break my ear drums. It sounded like my grandmother was being torn apart by a pack of wolves, and I literally had that thought go through my mind. This of course was just my imagination and fear getting the better of me. I remembered reading a thread on DV about hearing this sound that sounded like the fibers of the universe were ripping, and that's EXACTLY what it sounded like. It took everything I had not to throw my hands up to my ears to cover them. Each time I heard it I started yelling. The first few times that I felt these waves of sounds coming I kept yelling and I kept snapping back to reality saying that it's just part of the WILD process, and to stay calm, I'm entering the dream, but they never seemed to end. After about 5x of listening to this hell, I finally hit the big one and it felt like I was falling at a very high rate down a worm hole. I watch "Through The Wormhole With Morgan Freeman" all the time, which is a show about space time and how space and the universe work, and black holes and wormholes, and I literally saw, felt, and thought that the Earth had been swallowed by either a black hole, or a wormhole and was seeing the last seconds of my life.

I quickly thought to myself "Wait! I must be dreaming!" even though I wasn't fully asleep yet... as soon as that happened I snapped awake and sat up in my bed. I heard a knock at the door, and figured my grandma in the next room heard me yelling, I told her to come inside. I kept looking down at my sheets and had the idea to RC just to make sure it's not a false awakening. I tried the finger through hand thing, and the RC failed, my finger wouldn't go through. It was my uncle who walked in my room, not grandmother. He walked over to my dresser and kind of stood there awkwardly. He started talking but I couldn't hear him. I asked him to speak up. I had a bit of a small realization... my uncle usually talks with a loud voice, this is strange. Suddenly he starts shouting as loud as he possibly can and black smoke surrounds him and he is about 7' tall! Scared out of my mind, I remembered reading right before my WBTB that this guy entered a FA and realized it after he did multiple RC's, because the finger through palm method didn't work, but the nose plug technique did. I did the nose plug, and had to try for a few seconds and REALLY focus on what was happening in my nose, which was hard with a 7' demon standing in front of me. Suddenly it hit me! I'M ASLEEP! I remembered something I had read about dream control, and shouted "THIS IS MY DREAM!" He didn't seem affected. I tried shouting it again, no result. I knew not to be afraid of him, but naturally was a little intimidated by the looming dark presence. I closed my eyes and shouted "BE GONE!!" When I opened them he was gone. I stood up and looked around. I suddenly heard my grandma talking, but I realized it's in real life, talking to my grandfather, so I quickly and calmly jumped into my bed, laid down, and prepared for a DEILD. Success! I DEILD'ed and when I opened my eyes I was in a warehouse of sorts.

Wow, that's awesome! Congrats on your WILD and DEILD!

I like how you remembered everything when time was right. That's exactly how it happens for me and that's the reason why I love reading everything here on DV.

I also get the falling/flying at warp speed. (I also love the "Through The Wormhole With Morgan Freeman".) Great job!

What works for me the best is to think about the scary thing that it's something else. Like I knew there is something scary coming towards me and I said "oh, look at that cute bunny" and then I watched it morphing into a cute bunny. Or I said to the bad guy "you not bad and I love you" and I watched his facial features turn from bad to kind. So instead of saying what you want something to be, think as if it already was so.

      Happy dreams

Haha! That's funny! That loud waves of noise thing literally scared me shitless though.. I thought that I was yelling.. but I asked my grandparents this morning and they said they didn't hear anything.. so I must have already been asleep! *facepalm* I sat through that.... just for shits and giggles? xD

I can't help but reflect on my experience and feel there's so many things I could have done. I feel, now that I'm fully lucid and awake, that I was only mostly lucid in the dream, although I remember doing things and seeing things as if it was all happening in real time. I laid down to take a short nap earlier and started to feel the waves coming on as I remained fully aware, but then my nap was interrupted.

Any future advice to help my future endeavours? I'm gunna try again tonight, and feeling hopeful that I'll get another LD!

      Thanks again!

Yeah, my very first encounter with WILD sensations was during DEILD, which was only my 4th LD. I felt being twisted into a pretzel and I heard someone screaming. I shortly realized that someone was me. But I didn't wake up anybody, so it had to be just in my head

I get sounds very rarely. Maybe twice a sound of very strong wind that I could actually feel on my face, and last time it was a sound of a chainsaw getting closer. Here is a cool thread about hallucinations http://www.dreamviews.com/general-lu...ns-thread.html

As for advice, just do it again and again. And have fun

Cool! I'll check it out later, I just got done journaling two dreams from last nite/this morning. I did the same exact process I did the day before with my WBTB except this time I was really thirst so after drinking some water I already had by my bedside I went to the fridge and had a couple chugs of applejuice. I had a tough time getting back to sleep though and didn't become lucid. :\

It also left me really tired this morning when I woke up.. finally... at 11 AM! xD

      Guess I'll try again tonight!
