The heat, like you said, sounds like a hypnagogic hallucination, the heart beating fast I think (don't quote me on this--I vaguely remember reading this from somewhere, can't remember where) is a natural thing that happens as you're falling asleep and isn't from being scared or anything of the like, so you don't have to worry about this. I haven't had the heat problem myself, but I want to ask, have you tried taking off blankets/clothes or turning on a fan before doing a WILD? If not, I recommend trying out the above, as your heat hallucination may be an exaggerated manifestation of a slightly warmer-than-usual environment. Mantras definitely help too, and also, try to fully expect that you'll feel cooler and will yourself to feel colder (like what you'd do in a lucid dream). You could also try ignoring the hallucination entirely--I've found this helps with some of my own HH problems--and think about other things; a good thing to do at this point is to plan or visualize what you're going to dream about. It distracts yourself from the hallucination, and helps you set in your mind what you're going to do in the dream whilst still awake, it's a win-win situation!
Also, I recommend trying not to force the hypnagogic imagery to come. Watch it passively, and it's okay if the images disappear or you don't see anything. Forcing them to come or focusing on them too much won't help, so just watch them idly until they begin to form into a dream.
