dream within an hour of sleep?

I got to bed at about 10:40 ish, and I was asleep by 11, I woke up at 12:33 from a fairly long dream. Do we dream this early in the night usually?

To my knowledge if you don't get enough sleep in previous nights you get a sort of REM backlog, this means you experience more REM in the next bout of sleep you get.

But yes, you normally do dream that early anyway, but the REM periods are generally shorter towards the start of sleep so the dreams are fragmented and hard to remember.

Yes, 90 min/cycle is only an estimate. You could have it sooner/later and more/less, depending on the individual and whats going on with them and their sleep, and many other external factors.

With the right sleep cycles, you could have dreams in a 20 min nap!! If your body is deprived of sleep sometimes it will go directly into REM if it know it only has a short time to sleep.
