Puffin's Music Videos + Stuff!

I have to agree with Oneironaut on that one, namely for the Kung Fu Panda and Fight Club vids. The song choice for those two was a little, puzzling. Kung Fu Panda could have used a more Asian sounding song, and Fight Club would have gone perfectly with this song:

But besides that, they are really well cut together, I'm impressed at how you can take an entire movie and create a 2 1/2 minute music video out of it. I'd love to see you make a video that has more than one song in it too, so that you could transition from fast action into slower action and vice versa.

I'd like to know what editing program you're using if you don't mind, and also what your process is for ripping the movies and cutting out scenes and figuring out how to put everything together. I've been planning on creating an Al Pacino montage, so I want to get all of his movies together, and cut them to different songs from the movie soundtracks. I'd appreciate the help

Yeah, sometimes I choose strange songs for my edits.

I'm planning on making two more of Fight Club, actually - one using the song "Los Angeles" by Sugarcult, and the other with "Where is my Mind"! I actually find it more difficult to make longer music videos for some reason, which is why most of them are pretty short. The program I use to edit with is Final Cut Express; it's pretty easy to use once you get the hang of the basics, but it's only available for macs. As for the movie footage, I don't rip my own - although I own all the movies I've made videos of on blu-ray, I don't have ripping software. I simply get the digital file from a torrent site (ONLY for movies I've purchased because otherwise I'd feel like a thief

), albeit I'm not going to get into the details on here - you'll have to do the searching yourself.

Regarding the editing process, I like to put clips together that have the same motion - in the Fight Club video, for instance, look at the very beginning, the shot with the gun and then the building. Both are panning downwards. It can take a while to find good shots that go together, but it's worth it. Also look at 0:26 - 0:28. Both of those shots blend in, but they're in very different parts of the movie. One is panning to the right, and one is panning from the left. When each one pans, the image becomes blurry from the camera movement, so when you put them together, it's seamless. Also, I suggest not putting two clips together that have focal points on opposite sides of the video; unless it works visually - the first one could have a person on the left, then it starts to pan over to something else - at this point, put in the second clip because the eye will automatically follow the pan.

Here's a rough edit of Fight Club - Los Angeles; it was inspired partly by the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer, an upcoming film by David Fincher. The following is not the finished version so I've disabled comments and ratings on the video's Youtube page. Please offer constructive criticism here if you have any!

I will be changing the text to either a darker grey, or bright white; I'm not sure which right now.

Some touch-ups, logo, and some experimenting with colors... Not sure which one I like the best.

I'll still be working on it and doing more blending of the brush strokes, etc.

They both look good, but almost too different to really compare. I like the vibrance of the second one, but the first one seems to be just a little more natural.

Probably going to do a Sucker Punch one next in 1080p, just because the visuals look fantastic. Haven't actually seen it yet, though. x)

(By the way, that was the hardest movie to find, that I have ever searched for. I have been looking for it online since the day it came out in theaters, and I just got a good copy of it 3 days ago. Seriously, it was ridiculous, and I still don't understand why. I know the movie wasn't greatly received, but really. It's been MONTHS.)

Not bad, though. I really like your timing, when you tailor it to the music. I just use Windows Movie Maker, and my PC is a PoS, so trying to tactfully throw together .25-second clips is really just too cumbersome for me, because they don't tend to play all that smoothly in the preview stage.

So I tend to use longer clips and not have as many quick cuts.

I do find the contrast in our styles really interesting, though.

Haha, well, the worst case scenario is that we both use the same music. xD I'm thinking of "Click Click Boom" by Saliva.

I too found it very hard to find a good 1080p version for Inception, let alone any at all. That took a good hour and a half. Anyways, I used to use Windows Movie Maker, but from my own experiences it would keep vertically stretching the video files I'd use, so I got fed up with it.

Have you considered looking at Sony Vegas? I've heard it's a good program.

I had originally started using "Change" by Deftones, but I'm not so sure I'm going to keep it. The vid is still in its beginning stage, so I won't feel bad about starting it over, if I find a better song. It's really hard to find one that I feel I really want to stick with, though.

Just to clarify: the movie I was having trouble finding was Sucker Punch. I've had Inception for ages. (Wasn't sure if you knew which movie I was talking about.) If you've had a good copy of Sucker Punch for any longer than about a week, I'd love to know where you got it.

And I had that problem with Movie Maker for a while too, then I learned how to change the aspect ratio.

I've heard of Sony Vegas, though. Never used it, but I may check it out.

I always end up changing the song halfway through... I actually have five unfinished Inception videos kicking around on this computer! When you're talking about changing the aspect ratio, I've only seen two options; the 16:9 and 4:3 ones - sometimes the aspect ratio of the movie itself won't fit with one of them, especially if it's a widescreen release.

And... Yes, I assumed you were talking about Inception. I found it easy to find Sucker Punch, but I just got it yesterday on Btjunkie (.mkv format; I'm converting it with Popcorn right now).

The Fight Club montage was great, I thought the gray text worked really well.

Also those paintings are ridiculous. The amount of detail and everything, I don't even... You definitely have talent.
