Tell me what kind of girlfriends you can have

After talking to some people about a girlfriend, they asked me the question, "Do you want a girlfriend to date, or just as a girlfriend?" What does that mean? And what other kind of girlfriends could you get?

Some couples don't go out on what most people would consider a date. Instead they just hang out with each other all the time like best friends. Maybe that's what they meant when they said "a girlfriend to just be a girlfriend."

I think Black_Eagle's answer is what you're looking for. Some girls will want to go on lots of dates, others might just wanna hang out. In the end it's the preference on her (and your) part. It doesn't need to be a complex matter. You want a girlfriend because you want one, enough said.

From what I know, a girlfriend to date is where you actually 'go out' with them, maybe to the movies or go shopping with them, mentioned above. Just a girlfriend doesn't involve any going out at all, you are just like really good friends, with added bonuses.

Sounds to me like the difference between just wanting a girlfriend for someone to hang out with casually, or for a real serious emotional bond. To me the casual one is just a waste of time, if I didn't really feel that close there is no point for me, then there are the people who have relationships just to have them, that is not worth it to me. I don't like dating, but I'd like an emotional bond, but I've never been that open to anyone before with such feelings, so I am not sure how good it would play out.

Yeah, "girlfriend to date" would, I assume, be to date. To accompany to movies, dinner. I think what they mean by a girlfriend just to be a girlfriend (assuming they are average wisdom/depth of thought rather than most common) is a girl that you hang out with just to say you have a girlfriend. The former would be someone with whom you enjoy spending time and the latter would be a mutually beneficial relationship involving some combination of food, prestige, sex, or any number of "shallow" purposes.
