      Unhelpful Dream Sign

A significant dream sign (occurring in at least once dream a night) seems to be school or students from school. However I graduated last year and don't see those people anymore in real life. I also don't see the school anymore or the school setting.

How can I use this dream sign for my benefit if I can't attach reality checks to it?

That makes it even easier. You just got to sit there and say to yourself, "If I see my school I am dreaming." And repeat it a bunch of times just before you go to sleep. If you get into the habit of doing that, eventually you will start catching it all the time.

You can become lucid without using the dream sign - just practice awareness and really observing what's going on around you.

Or, you can always try MILD as Alric said.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Actually, it is a helpful sign to have recurring dreams once every night. Once you start doing that, all you need to do is to tell yourself that you are henceforth going to be using that dream as a yardstick to "wake up" in the dream state. Over the years, I noted several key, recurring dreams which I use as yardsticks to "wake me up".
Came across some interesting techniques at dreamtwits.com. You might want to check it out.
      Happy dream adventures.
