This has happened to me a few times, but for no apparent reason. When it happened, I didn't get a false awakening that I know of and seemingly slept normally. I don't know why it happens. I think it happens occasionally to many people, as I've heard someone else describe the phenomenon.

As a related side note, I hate staying up all night, not only because I'm tired the next day, but because my sense of what day it is is completely confused. I don't remember whether a memory of something that's happened is from today or the day before.

Today is Thursday... in New Zealand
It's definitely possible that your dreams have influenced your perception of reality; after all, you rarely question reality while in the dream state. Ever triggered dream recall by thinking of a specific subject, and only then discounted the dream as separate from reality? Your subconscious has a lot to process, and dreams are part of that jumbled pile of information.
