How do I tell if im actually having a lucid dream or not?

I've heard that if you're trying too hard to have a lucid dream then you have non lucid dreams about being lucid. I'm wondering how to tell the difference between these dreams and lucid dreams while in the dream.

I get dreams about lucid dreams too. I also dream O.B.Es too. I'd be laying there trying one then I'd fall asleep and dream that I had one...

If you know it's a dream then it's a lucid dream. Simple as that.

Agreed. Normally when I'm just plain dreaming I'm pretty much on autopilot or not consciously paying attention to the point where I may as well have not even been there and once I wake up I'm hit with fragments of my automatous adventure. However when I become lucid It's almost like I snap out of it as if I were sleep walking the whole time, and become relatively/completely aware as if it were waking life. At this point for me, if for some reason I'm not completely sure, I'll do an RC.

I haven't heard of what you're talking about but, I guess it would be possible. I would say if this happened, you were already lucid but happy with following the scenario already in progress and eventually became none lucid resulting in the rest of the dream running its course like any other dream. It'd probably be best to keep a mental note to not get side tracked/absorbed in what's going on so you can stop and get your barrings.

My point is, telling the difference between none lucid-lucid dreams should boil down to the same fundamentals as any other dream, having confidence in your practice/technique to give you that push into awareness.

trying too hard is like back in elementary, you force your mind, so you don't see the answer with simple means.

Do something that cannot possibly be done in reality. For instance, jump! You will quickly discover that dream gravity is more like on the moon then Earth. That is when the fun begins.
