I don't pinch myself, I tend to just look at my hands and pinch my nose to try and breathe in. Another one I do is trying to push my thumb through my palm, you'll find that works in a dream. This was most definitely still a lucid. Remember, you become lucid not from a reality check, but from noticing something is out of place, as you did. You did well to get even that far. You were lucid and in control of yourself, so you could try the reality check to actually make it more clear to yourself.
You say you can't remember if it worked or not, so it sounds like you need to work on recall. If you haven't already, start up a Dream Journal, and be sure to write in it every morning. Lie in bed after you wake up for a few minutes and think backwards through your dream to make sure you remember it all before writing it in your dream journal. That will help with recall. You could also use mantras, saying, "I remember my dreams tonight," as you fall asleep will help you remember your dreams more, as it relays the information to your subconscious that you would like to remember your dreams.

If you still have trouble, you could check out the Intro Class of the DV Academy. Good luck!

RCs can fail, if you do them mechanically, absentmindedly, as a rutine. Then in a dream you will RC and that's that.

When you practice RCs, you have to believe, that you will have more fingers, thumb will go through palm, you can breathe through pinched nose, etc., because you are in a dream.

But RCs themself don't usually get you lucid. Most of the time you have to have a pinch of awareness, something telling you to RC. And you get that from practicing daytime awareness.

So most of the time, first you have some awareness that gives you an urge to RC. Then you RC. But you will likely know you are dreaming even before you finish your RC.

Mine's are looking at hands and taking off headphones and checking whether i can still hear whatever i am listening to(usually binaural beats for relaxation for naps).
When you do reality check in waking life do you fully expect it to show you that you are dreaming? If not, do so, it will trigger a bit of dream control when you do it in dream which will make it more likely to work.
Also do reality checks each time you wake up/get up from the bed to catch false awakenings.

One RC did not work for me before. It was the breath with your nose closed one. So I had to pinch myself.
