Yea my visualization skill is probably slightly better than the average person, since I have practised it for years.
However the phone test is not something you have to see, only feel. Like if you right now closed your eyes and tried to feel like you were holding your phone or another familar object like a pen in your hand and actually felt it!
All non-physical sensations work as a test to see if you are in a dream.

You can imagine hearing your favorite song or even a voice of a person you meet alot.

And this is what have happened to me while doing these tests:

Senses used: SIGHT
The first time I successfully DEILDed was when I woke up from a long vivid dream, and upon awakening I closed my eyes and imagined the dream I just had experienced.
I felt that my mind somehow felt slightly different, it can't be explained, but I remember that I had a different kind of consciousness. Then as I closed my eyes my thoughts felt more real and close, and as I imagined the recalled dream I was sucked into that visualization. Suddenly I was sitting in a car and was amazed of how real the thought felt but then I thought "wait a minute I am inside a dream!"

Senses used: HEARING
I woke up in the middle of the night and I somehow started to think about how strange it was that our brain can remember the sound of a person's voice.
I started to imagine hearing different people I know in real life speak. Like imagining my best friend rambling about a game he had played, then I imagined hearing a song I like to listen to, but suddenly it took life on it's own and I really heard the song. But I still had closed eyes and felt that I was laying in my bed.
I went up, the song stopped and I was walking around in my room thinking about how this technique could be used, but then suddenly,
I wake up in my bed...

Senses used: TOUCH
I woke up and closed my eyes, my mind was tired and instead og thinking of a phone, as I had planned to do, I thought about holding a rock.
I then felt that I was holding a rock in my hands and I felt the texture of it. I went out of my bed and now I knew it was a dream, so I jumped out through my glass window and flew around.

So you see, the funny thing about this test is that you don't actually have to be good at visualizing, it happens automatically if you are in the dream or close to dreaming. And if nothing happens one should as you say fall back to sleep. But my personal advice to add, would be to reality check first!
