It's probably not the chocolate, but more of just a natural waxing and waning of dream recall. Your dream recall will often vary, with some nights being outstanding with several long, vivid dreams to write down, and others with just a couple fragments, if anything at all. You're probably just in a dry period of recall. Just be sure to keep up with your dream journal and write down anything you can remember, even if it's just little details or how you felt.

Another trick to possibly increasing recall is, when you wake up in the morning, lay completely still for a couple minutes and focus on any dreams that you remember. Try and remember specific details along with plot details and focus on what you just woke up from and what just happened to you. Just think about this for a couple minutes, and if you feel that you start remembering more and more details then keep going if you'd like. After maybe 5 minutes you can go ahead and write down what you remembered. This can help increase momentary recall to help just get something down on paper, but obviously your main goal is to remember your dreams without having to do this, so keep that in mind.

Hope you get back to your past dream recall and good luck!

I've been going through a dry spell on dream recall as well. I skim through my past Dream Journal entries every now and then for motivation. I've kept a DJ for over 10 years. It's amazing how some of the dream entries I can remember like I dreamt them last night, others I don't even recognize my own handwriting!
I tend to get out of bed right away when I wake up and I haven't really been focusing on my dreams lately, so I'm not too discouraged to actively try lucid dreaming again. I think in my case, I just need to put a little more effort into it
