How do you know you were in REM? REM is the dream. If there is no dream, you are not in REM. If you can feel sleep paralysis, you are not in REM (in a dream, one can't feel sleep paralysis unless they think about it). A misuse of terms, this is.

WILD is a hard technique for some. If you were focusing the mind, and stayed relaxed (note: staying relaxed doesn't mean you have to stay completely still), you are on your way to a successful WILD. Don't give up after one try! Keep at it, and don't forget to reality check even when you fail.

I just guessed I was in REM because my eyes were moving rapidly.

I had only tried WILD once before and did manage to get the paralysis to work but I just never can seem to get the rest of it down.

Should I be trying to focus on coming up with an image or a "place" to go? Or should I just kind of let things happen and not try to think?
