Things to do before lucid dreaming

I have come up with a list of things I think you could work on before attempting to lucid dream to develop your mental discipline. I believe this could help a lot when attempting to attain a lucid dream. Also, most of these could help you out in your daily life even if you don't achieve any dreaming success with them. I do know that they could take a while and would be a lot of work, but worth it. I myself can do the first two.

One: use your mind to get rid of pain. This can be done a lot of ways. First off, you could simply tell yourself something like " pain is only a messenger. pain has no real meaning if I can control it. " You could also tell yourself something along the lines of " the pain will disappear if I tell it to. "

Two: do something else with your mind that is harder. Make a cold shower hot. For this, tell yourself either " the water is hot and there is no way around it " or " the water will be hot when I say it is ".

Teach yourself to be ambidextrous: This is definitely one of the trickiest, but it will go a long ways towards developing your mental discipline. Being ambidextrous means that you can use your dominant hand almost as well as your non dominant hand. A lot of people can do this, it just takes some practice. Just use your non dominant hand to do simple tasks.

      Thanks for looking/

oniman7, interesting methods to strengthen your mind control! I especially like the last two.

It is ALWAYS cold at my job.. so tomorrow I'm going to tell myself that I'm warm and see how far I get.

I think I will also try writing with my left hand (since I'm right handed) and see if I can't waken that side of my brain alittle bit.

I tried the shower effect, and it worked to an extent, but I don't think I could really simulate anymore heat than I did if it wasn't present.

If you would like some advice, there are a few things I always do
      1) Imagine that, with every heartbeat, heat is radiating from the outside in. I achieve mild success with this, the outside of my skin is cold, but it keeps the rest from penetrating deeper, if you know what I mean ( I can't believe Florida! Even in December, I can't see my breath outside at night ! )
      2) tell yourself the room will gradually get warmer, without you noticing.

It's all in your head. And the moment you started doubting it was the moment it stopped working. Although, I haven't been able to make it feel hot yet, just slightly warm. It all comes down to believing and practicing.

      No it's not.
When we take cold showers our bodies automatically react. Your autonomic nervous system causes blood that would normally be in our internal organs to rush to the skin causing you to feel warmer. That's why when you get out you may sometimes have a pinkish look to your skin.
This is very good for you though. That extra blood flow helps with circulation, strengthens your nervous system and momentarily raises you blood pressure causing it to be lower in you normal setting.
The autonomic nervous system gets it's name from the fact that it is automatic and we can't control it. So this "effect" is not psychological it's physiological.

I see what you're saying, but it is psychological in a way. You can force your brain to send the signals to the body making it warmer.

This actually could work, but it is very hard, and I doubt more than handful of people in the entire world could do it. One guy managed to increase his body temperature with his mind, he was scientifically proven to have higher temperature and cold tolerance than the average human. He sat in 30 degree water for 20 minutes before he started shivering. He also ran a marathon through the arctic in his underwear, and holds the world record for the longest swim under ice ( again, in his underwear )

Mental discipline? I call that full-blown autohypnosis!
It would certainly be a very good tool for inducing lucid dreams. I'll try out the shower one tomorrow (if I can remember it so early in the morning ).

it basically is auto hypnosis, but it requires a large amount of mental discipline.

That sounds... hard and/or painful <.<
Excepting the ambidextrous part, because well... I'm ambidextrous, will try to auto-hypnotize me now, it also sounds like fun lol

Actually I do something that sometimes takes away my physical pain. Whenever I get hurt I think to myself "This is just pain it won't kill me or anything" and the pain actually goes away a little.

I must admit I often tense the muscles in that area and hold my breath tight (if that makes sense) and it helps divert the pain till it subsides.
Eg: hitting yout finger with a hammer accidentally.

You could try telling yourself your not hungry when you start getting the craving to eat. I'm actually doing this right now cus I just read the thread... working pretty well. Trying to lose weight? I think this kind of mental discipline could go a long way to help you cut those extra pounds.

I've noticed a lot of times when I initially get hungry my body is sending those signals and my stomache starts to hurt. But after a while, I will get a "second wind" and I am no longer hungry without having eaten anything. It would be pretty cool if a reaction to hunger was something one could control and that it was just in your head. One could hypothetically then "tell themself they are full" and that might avoid or block the signals the body sends that your stomache is hurting because you are hungry.

      As far as the pain,
I try to do this every time I get a headache, and it really does work.
I implore you to try it when your head starts hurting.
Just focus on the pain as fire, and imagine dumping a bucket of cold water on your head. =)

Oh my god, you're right. I have a head ache just now, and it immediately softened it. Thanks.

This is true, but be careful with this. It will not actually keep you from going hungry, your brain will just ignore the nerves that tell you you are. I would suggest finding out what is causing the problem before you try getting rid of the pain ( after all, we feel pain for a reason ).

The same could easily be said for headaches.

It's not really much of a pain that I was referring to, just the feeling of hunger that everyone feels when they want to eat. I eat meals and snacks way too often (common, at least, to most Americans). And while normal meals are not a problem, eating several snacks between meals can be pretty unhealthy depending on what you eat. This could definitely be a good way to curb some of those cravings for snacks in between meals.

But, yes, by all means, if you are having any sort of unusual pain that you are trying to eliminate then you should check out the problem

Of course. I just wanted to warn people so they didn't break a bone or something and just ignore the pain ( have to be pretty talented to do that though )
