I'm listening to radio show with Professor of Physics at the Univ. of Conn., Dr. Ron Mallett, and he's building a time machine.
He says going near a black hole slow down time for you, therefore gravity affects time. Light has gravity, therefore light can affect time. So by sending a beam of light in a cricle (actually a square, by reflecting it) it distorts time and space in the middle. Sounds easy enough, where's that laser pointer? He's not really using crude mirrors by the way.
But you could only go back as far as the first time the machine was turned on, like in the movie Primer. Something like the circling light make a slinky like coil you can follow back in time, or to a future date where the machine is still running.
Can't find a link to the one I'm listening too, but he seems to have a lot of videos on youtube.
