I’ve only slept two-and-a-half hours but I’m already beingwoken by my neighbor’s contractors. They are loud and moving about not far frommy bedroom. I’m listening to their words as they cuss and talk about the moldingson his house. I really hate them.

I fall back asleep but I can now see their words floating inthe air above me as they penetrate the wall by my head. The words are white andbold, as though someone typed them in their air. I am shooting them with mylaser rifle for points. Words that end in -y- are worth 7 points, words thathave a -th- in them are worth 5 pointsand any word that ends in -s- is worth 3 points. All other words are worth oneunless it ends in a double vowel.
While playing this game I can see my score adding up on anearby scoreboard mounted inside the wall to my right. Normally this would bewhere my closet is. I’m listed as the Home team. The Visitor team hasn’t shotyet and their score is zero.
I’m suddenly aware of fans sitting in bleachers on the edgeof the room, and most are cheering for me. I look down at the clothes I’mwearing and find they are bright blue. I suddenly become lucid, rememberingthat blue is my dream sign (as listed in my workbook) and I touch my shirtwhile looking down at it. My hand becomes blue, absorbing the color from theshirt like a paper towel absorbs water, and I start laughing. I can’t believemy hand is actually blue! I turn it this way and that to make sure it is real, counting my fingers and finding all five are in place.
I can’t believe my RC actually worked, and the wonder of itmakes me feel like I’m about to lose my dream. I start reciting,” I amdreaming, I am dreaming!” and my dream stabilizes. My surroundings have changedinto a basketball court but this doesn’t suit me. I’ve never been one to standout and perform, even hating being inside the gym in high school. I know I can’tjust walk out without a reason so I shoot directly at a blank spot in thebleachers, creating a hole just big enough to walk through if I bend over. Thismakes the crowd cheer with a roar!
I drop my gun, which looks something like a Tommy Gun mixedwith a child’s toy, white and plastic and cheap-looking. I don’t need it anylonger and I really just want to go somewhere else. I walk through the hole, passing the faceless opposing team as I do, words coming out of their mouthssimilar to the ones I was shooting but smaller. Their heads seem too small fortheir bodies.
I see the janitor up ahead mopping the floor. He’s old, wearing coveralls and using a silver pail for his water instead of the bigmop-bucket on wheels that I am used to seeing. As I approach he offers me themop he’s using and just as I take it, I wake up.
Stupid contractors are still outside.
