    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #254: Adobe

I’m driving through a city, looking for some place to park. My dream family is here with me -- a dark-haired woman is my wife, my young daughter is in a car seat in the back, and there’s maybe a 2nd child (a son?) as well. We’re exhausted and homeless, living out of our car. I pull into a parking space next to a hill and sleep for a while. A cop car pulls up soon, though, and we have to move on.

Now we’re driving down a dusty freeway that’s under construction. Workers wander back and forth, while a thick cloud of tan dust obscures my vision. I can barely see 30 feet in front of me and I’m really scared that I’m going to hit someone. A worker walks right in front of the car and I swerve, barely missing him. I’m so afraid that I’m going to kill somebody and I panic myself into…

… a false awakening. I believe that I’m anotherdreamer and that I need to write this dream down before I forget it. My surroundings are alien to me, though, and I’m feeling super lazy, way too tired to get out of bed to journal. Something seems odd, though, and I flow into…

… another false awakening as myself! :canislucidus: I still feel really tired and lazy, but this time since I’ve “really woken up”, I decide to do the right thing and journal. I grab my DJ and walk into the bathroom, but as I’m holding the DJ I notice that the journal isn’t as thick as it usually is. (I keep a pen jammed in it.) I try the nose pinch, blow through, and
now I’m lucid. I walk back into the bedroom and my vision dims until I’m in the void.

I rub my hands together, recalling the idea to try a little singing the next time I’m in the void. I sing a line about how “this is a lucid dreeeeeeam” and my voice comes out like half-badass/half-joke rock like Tenacious D. After some more singing and hand-rubbing, my vision comes back and I’m in my bedroom closet. I walk back out to the window and try some air guitar. It’s lame at first, but after a few tries, I hear some distant chords of electric guitar that actually sound pretty good.

I look out through the bedroom window onto a nighttime desert scene. As far as I can see there are rows of adobe buildings lit by neon signs. It looks like fun, so I phase through the window and hulk-jump off the side of the house toward the buildings. I do some mid-air guitar playing during this jump, too, and kind of flail my legs around like I’m trying to do some kind of rock star jump thing. I land between one set of restaurants and buildings on a dusty street, then hop into the air again.

While I’m up in the air, I decide that I want to try summoning Dreamer to hang out at one of these places to talk and pig out on a bunch of dream food. Out loud I say, “Okay, I know we’re supposed to meet here…” and then “Don’t be late!” I nag. When I land, though, the DC waiting there is a woman I don’t recognize, tall and pale with short brown hair, a pierced nose, and multiple piercings on each ear. She starts speaking to me in this really caustic, unpleasant American accent, berating me about my guitar playing.

“Your guitar playing was all bullshit,” says the woman. “That wasn’t even you!” She walks up to me, continuing to scold and complain about my guitar playing, telling me that my playing sucked, etc. I find this pretty annoying but for some reason I don’t think to just leave.

I don’t find this DC appealing, but I decide to turn things around by saying, “There’s no need to be so weird about it. If you wanted to have sex with me, you should have just asked.” As I say this, she takes on a different countenance, her hair darkening, her body growing a little shorter, a little more athletic-looking, and a softer, more attractive face, probably mixed-race. She approaches me and we kiss. We awkwardly lose our balance and do this not-at-all sexy fall onto the road. I make an attempt at escalating things to sexytime, but my vision has faded out. There are a few more seconds of void-kissing before
    the dream ends.

It's so interesting that you had the life of another character, with a different wife and kids, as well as a tragic backstory!
How often do you have dreams where you take on a different persona?

And then you were anotherdreamboat!? Dare I ask how many appendages you had?

I love that your singing practice paid off and you now sound like Jack Black!
Maybe the title of your next song can be, "Fucking Lucidityyyyy!"

Rock star hulk jumping? My god, this dream just keeps getting more badass! (Did I use it right?)

Oh man, no wonder I didn't show up... I am notoriously tardy!
Lucky I didn't rock up after that though, it sounds like you were occupied, haha.
Interesting way to turn around the negative scene... sorry you had to endure some scolding and insults first though!

@Dreamer - Good question! I'd have to say that it's about... 15% of the time maybe where I'll be a completely different person? Always male as far as I can remember (?) too. There are lots of dreams where my life circumstances are different in some way of course, but the ones with the really dramatic differences are interesting. Do you ever get these?

And then you were anotherdreamboat!? Dare I ask how many appendages you had?
LOL. Ohhhh my goodness, if I'd only gotten lucid at that point! I'd have totally had to check and/or expand my appendage count just to say that I did it.

Ha ha, that's actually a really good idea! To try to compose and remember a song like that. Just go in with the intent of doing the composition, remembering everything, and trying to get as much of it saved off in some form where I can bring it back later. I will add that to my lucid wishlist! And yes your usage of badass was perfect! =D

Yeah, if you'd been there, you'd have already judo-thrown that unpleasant DC off into the desert before I even arrived! I know that you've never allow some punk DC to speak so disrespectfully about my dream rock!

An "identity crisis" at the beginning, followed by a rock star, air guitar, hulk super jump, and then the anti-sexy encounter and fall...
      This dream is all !

Ha ha, thanks, Bharmo! I guess you're right... I did it all in this dream, but did none of it terribly well! Such great fun in any case!

Very cool! Congrats on yet another LD! I too will dream of being someone else...but the homeless family living out of the car...so interesting! I wonder where these come from. The anotherdreamer FA is truly bizarre! And congrats on turning that DC around!

Man, what an extreme dream! May I ask how you actually knew you were anotherdreamer? Or can you remember from other non-you dreams how you can tell? I've never had one of these, and so my first thought was, wouldn't you just always think you are yourself, even if you are a different you, if you know what I mean?

@Tihiti - Oh man, thanks, what a nice thing to say! Feeling free to really enjoy my LDs (even in ways that make me look foolish, ha ha) is a big part of my... "lucid dreaming self-image", I guess you'd call it. So thank you!

@fogelbise - That's cool! You too huh? How often does it happen for you that you'll be playing another person's part? It's amazing to see just how far false memory can take us... to the point where even our true identities are temporarily forgotten / obscured!

And thanks! You know what's hilarious? As clumsy as my romantic turnaround attempt was, as I was typing this DJ and noticing how not-smooth I thought, "Well I did my best, but I'm no fogelbise!"

@Jenkees - Thanks, Jenkees! Yeah, the best way to describe it would be as the logical conclusion of the false memories we have in non-lucids. In some sliver of my dreams, I'll have a false memory that gives me a completely different identity. I just "remember" that I'm some guy driving around homeless and desperate with a family (of strangers!)

Likewise, with the anotherdreamer segment, I just "remembered" that I, anotherdreamer, had just woken up from a dream. When I wake up, there's that familiar feeling of rebuilding your identity and sense of place (the "where was I?", "how'd I get here?" set of questions.) Except in this case, the dream filled in some craziness for me instead, which I swallowed.

So yeah, I had the sense of being "me", the person who had just dreamt the entire previous segment. But that memory of "me" turned out to be a dream forgery!

Man, you know what? I have been female before. I remember now... I had one, possibly two dreams during my challenge with Dreamer where I believed that I was actually her! Yep, cross-checked my DJ, there was an NLD (with some semi-lucidity) in early august like that. It's crazy!

      Congrats on the ld, anotherdreamer!

I really liked the desert scenery with all the adobe houses. Also, your rockstar performance sounds like a lot of fun and great idea singing your way out of the void.

Don't know what was wrong with that female DC's mood but you handled very effectively there too.

I thought about that question when I read your DJ. My initial thought was that it was not that frequent, but the more I look at my NLDs the more I find instances where I am not myself.

Haha, thank you! Well I'm definitely no CanisLucidus in other ways!

@NyxCC - Ha ha, thanks! I hope that I still get to add this one to my count in spite of the FA role-playing!

I was pleased that I remembered to sing! I have a lot of faith in the power of music in LDs, in part because this is the only time when I have a shot at having a badass singing voice. It seems to really focus the mind, too, and allow you to stay completely concentrated on just the goal, plus letting you set the whole thing to a soundtrack. That's got to be good!

Hmm, maybe I'll have to try turning an entire LD into a musical! Can't hurt to try!

Yeah that makes sense. Waking up from that must be such a strange and disorientating feeling. It already is disorientating enough for me waking up from most "normal" dreams. I guess I was wondering why you considered your identity while in the dream, playing that particular character, but of course you only consider this once you wake up and put it all together.

Wow, that's crazy you've had dreams as Dreamer! Surely in the back of your mind you know something is not normal, so maybe it can work as a dream sign if you're onto it.

Yeah, exactly... your identity is just something that you take for granted in waking life, and for me it's the same way in dreams. Except in these cases, I'm completely wrong.

Good idea about it being a dreamsign! I actually did become semi-lucid during the dream where I was Dreamer. I spent a great deal of the dream semi-lucid. I actually realized that I was dreaming on some level, and I (as Dreamer) went on DV to look up stabilization tips. But it was a somewhat low level of lucidity and I never got clear on who I actually was. So very much a "semi-lucid" experience.

But maybe it's a good sign that I'm actually somewhat onto the dreamsign idea that you're suggesting!
