The Unprepared Astronaut

I finally made it into space! Even though I had no idea how to handle myself once I got there, the fact that I flew up there was a huge milestone. Before this, stable flight had been a bit elusive for me. Big step forward!

Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

Lucid #20: The Unprepared Astronaut

I'm a graduating senior in college, following around a guy who seems to think we're close friends. I feel pretty guilty because I have no memory of him at all. I'm accompanying him so he can say his post-college goodbyes to his girlfriend. We meet her outside of a dormitory, and I recognize her as a girl that I know from high school. I recognize how weird this is and quickly find myself lucid.

Both of the dream characters freeze in place, looking into one another's eyes. I decide to leave the love birds alone while I take another pass at Task of the Month. (In this case, I'm going to be trying to remove my head and replace it with a pumpkin.) I try to will a mirror onto the outer dormitory wall but nothing appears.

I remember how much more dream control success I have when I'm detailed and thorough. I try again, this time imagining an ornate mirror that's been worn by time, the paint on its frame beginning to chip and flake off. This time I get my mirror!

I look into the mirror but it's dirty and cloudy-looking. The reflection looks like a shirtless me but it's very hard to make out any detail. I wipe at the mirror but it just doesn't make any difference. Rather than get hung up here and waste a lucid dream doing glass-cleaning, I decide to spend my time trying out other things.

I leave the grounds of the dormitory and head out onto a quiet, empty street. The morning feels chilly and the city is covered with a blanket of fog. I wonder what this fog looks like from above, so I decide to try flying above it. This time, I focus on the little details. The chill of humid air against my fingertips. The breeze flowing past my hair and tickling my scalp. Concentrating on these sensations leaves me no time for doubt and I smoothly rise up into the fog.

The fog swallows me whole as I rise. I wonder how long it will take me to pierce it. I feel myself going faster and faster and soon I'm rocketing up through the atmosphere. The fog never seems to end and I feel like I must be high above the Earth.

Suddenly I break through into blackness. I stop rising, my momentum suddenly gone. I'm in the blackness of space and the fog is now a floor below me. I realize that it isn't just the city that was covered in fog -- it's the entire planet. I am able to breathe but I somehow can't keep myself from doing so in these desperate, shallow gasps.

My flight abilities have stopped working and my arms and legs flail helplessly. I will myself a pair of rocket shoes but I get confused trying to work the lever that turns them on. I start losing my cool and my breathing becomes even gaspier until
I wake up.

Rocket shoes work better if you have more pee water.

LOL! Ophelia, you can't be making me laugh like that after I just drank all this pee water!

Sweet dream. I find it difficult to get too high. Like if I lose track of the ground I get confused and lost. This reminds me of a LD from way back that I did manage to get to Saturn . Cant remember if I broke gravity or if I wormholed. When I got there it turned into a child's toy. I found myself holding in it a room instead of being in space.

The loss of navigation at high altitude is an interesting problem. You know, come to think of it, it may be that I got lucky winding up in an Earth that was covered in fog. With no actual visuals to convince me otherwise or throw me off, I just assumed that I was heading straight up. And of course, in a lucid dream, that means you usually are.

That dream where you got to Saturn... do you still have it? I'm kinda paranoid about losing my old dream journal entries. I even back em up on my Google Drive every so often. Anyway, it's trippy that Saturn turned into a little kid's toy. The dreaming mind comes up with all kinds of cool stuff that the waking mind just doesn't.

OH WOW. I found my grandfathered dream journals. I have two for some reason. HERE is the Saturn dream from 07-24-2007. It was really long but interesting. And of course I have reward sex at the end. What is my deal? I am going to have to compile all my past dreams and do some reading. I think it will help me a lot.

Wow, you've got lucid dreams here (such as this one) from over five years ago. This must make you some kind of Dream Views OG.

That's some dream. It seems like you were getting some incredible length to these dreams, even back then. You seemed to be doing a Task of the Month, too, although I had no idea which part it was. You did like a million different things in that dream. (Including Maggie Gyllenhaal.)

There was some nice stabilization in that dream. It seemed like you were going to lose it a couple times and there were a few pretty violent scene transitions (like the vortex into the Dick Tracy movie!)

LOL thanks. I took a looooong break from LDing so I kind of had to start over. I think the TOTM was enter a vortex I'm not sure.

Xanous,
This quote from your dream, the voice on the T.V.
"If you want it, then don't want it, then want it again, it will come to you."
If there was a lucid bible, that would be in there. Wanting something too much is basically trying to control the dream. In order to do that, you give it shot without anything in return. And if you want too much, the feeling is more powerful at first but then dies out faster as well.
This is something I need to work on. Awesome dream...

Canis, Congrats man! Flying is one of those things that just gets better every time. Not looking until you are ready is important. One thing that really helped me when I first learned how to fly was staring at one spot and flying in that direction. Then once you are high in the atmosphere, slow down and stop. Then slowly look lower as you are looking around. That is how I learned to fly anyways, everyone is different. Recently I have just been rocketing into space...fun at first, but boring after a while.

awesome dreams :D

Thanks for the comments and excellent advice, Chimpertainment! I'm not sure how I managed to miss your comment when you first posted it.

I really appreciate the flying tips, especially the material on space flight (which, as this dream makes obvious, is something I'm really inexperienced with.) It sounds like you never really had any of the breathing or navigation trouble that I did in space and I imagine it's something that I'll get over in due time as well.

But man, I can't imagine getting bored with space flight, though! I've got my "master list of crazy stuff I'd like to try in lucid dreams" and there's a whole section of space stuff. If you find yourself getting bored up there, you might find one or two on my list that sound like fun:

-Fly to the moon
-Watch earthrise from the moon
-Fly to each of the planets (yes, Pluto, you will always be a planet to me)
-Fly to the asteroid belt
-Watch the sunrise from Mars
-Fly into the sun
-Fly into a black hole
-Create a new planet in deep space
-Terraform Mars
-Fly to the Andromeda Galaxy
-Travel back in time to witness the Big Bang
-Travel forward in time to witness the end of the universe

Those are some great ideas!
I suppose I should have described my experience in a bit more detail. My focus on flying drove me to simply rocket into space. There were a couple lucids where i just went into space and kept flying until my lucidity burned out. While doing this, I would be flying past all sorts of space objects. It was fun the couple times that I did that, but after that it lost its amazing quality.
Your ideas for exploration are definitely something I would like to go for in the future. I remember one lucid I had years ago where I flew into the sun. And one of my present goals is to go see the rovers on Mars. Space is limitless after all. :)

That's very cool. Your space flight abilities are exactly where I want to raise my game to. I love that you actually flew into the sun! I'm pretty excited about that one. Did you happen to journal it when it happened? I'd love to read about that one.

That Mars Rover idea is great. The Rover could make a cool DC. Although, it'd need to speed up in dream. I think that thing isn't designed to go more than a couple inches a second! (Hey, when you only build one and it costs millions of dollars, you can't be too careful!)

Well that dream occurred several years ago. I was quite a powerful lucid dreamer as a 6-9 year old child and flying into the sun was one of my many experiences. Sadly, I don't remember most of my dreams but I had so many I tend to remember quite a number of them. Every once in a while, something will trigger an old memory of a dream. That has led to me think I am making things up, but for the most part that is just my over active self doubt talking.

Most of my early lucids developed spontaneously and many of the things I did in them were not intentional. When I flew into the sun, I had been flying around the solar system and I decided to go to the sun. When I got closer I felt the unbelievable heat but no pain. When I entered the sun, everything became completely white and my awareness dissolved. By that I mean, my awareness became everything. Kinda hard to explain. Anyway, it was one of my best lucid experiences, and I would love to do that again. :)

That's a great dream, Chimpertainment. Thanks for taking the time to share it. The experience sounds like it was more mind-blowing than I'd imagined it would be. I was figuring bright light, then I turn into a Crispy Critter and wake up.

I think that the lucid "to do" list is always going to be pretty full. (Added the Rover, BTW.)
