Justin McCarthy Mrs. Butler English 9 January 2008 What is a “Mockingbird?” In the book To Kill a Mockingbird the mockingbird is used as a symbolic message that is passed onto the readers. The message behind the mocking bird is that people who do nothing but good in their life can be subject to ridicule, hate or murder just for being a decent and respectful human being. This is linked with a mockingbird in the book when Atticus says to Jem “I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Miss Maudie gave us the actual symbolism of the statement when scout asked her to elaborate on what her dad had just said. Miss Maudie said "You're father's right," she said. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mocking bird." With the symbolic aspect of a mockingbird in mind we can look back at the book and see actual characters that fit the mental traits that Miss Maudie pointed out. Three or four character to come to my mind when I think of a mockingbird but two I think fit the profile more than the others. Atticus Finch from the get go we know is a well respected man in Maycomb county. He is a lawyer and a widowed father of 2 young children. Atticus stood for all that was right, he often preached to his kids that they should try to put themselves in others “skin” to see how their life is and see the hardships and the calamities that they have to deal with. When Atticus took the case of Tom Robinson, he knew that it could prove detrimental to him and even more importantly Jem and Scout. By taking a black mans case and trying to fight for the justice of him he put himself in the cross-hare of the racist community in and around Maycomb. This couldn’t be anymore evident when Atticus was sitting out front of the jail where Tom was being held. He was soon confronted by a mob of racists who cleverly constructed a plan to have Mr. Tate distracted which left Atticus and Tom defenceless. As the hostile mob approached Atticus knew that that they were going to do anything to get to Tom to kill him and if he was in their way the mob would kill him to. The book To kill a Mockingbird is heavily drowned in symbolism and the mockingbird is a clear Does this ryhme?
