That was actually really helpful, I didn't think of it that way. Whenever I want to do something like fly around, I usually try one technique and if it happens to fail, I'll try another, then another, and another, etc until I eventually give up. Next time I become lucid and find myself unable to pull something off, I'll give your suggestion a go.
