The best way to stop this from happening is to remember that you are in your own dream, and that you have control. You can elongate the dream, or chain them using the DEILD technique. I find that the less rushed I feel, the longer the dream will last, because I am not expecting it to end any time soon.

For a Dream Journal, I would recommend not using a phone, but using a pen and paper. Have you ever sat up really late at night on your computer? You're able to do this because the computer screen tricks your brain into thinking it's still daytime which stops the release of the hormone which makes you want to go to bed, which makes you less tired. The phone screen in the middle of the night may do the same thing to you, so I recommend paper and a pen. Having a Dream Journal will definitely help out your recall and you will see it rise quite quickly once you start placing importance on your dreams when you wake up.
