This is actually pretty cool, especially since it is from the past... as far as knowing how this applied to your waking life, that may be a bit difficult for you to remember, but I can still sift through the meaning for you...
First, you were a detective, which could have indicated that you were searching (waking life) for your hidden talents or abilities. This symbolism could also have meant that you were trying to solve some problem and were seeking truth about an issue that was worrying you.
Being that you were inside of the church means that you may have been looking for some sort of spiritual (not necessarily religious) enlightenment or guidance. (As if needing to be uplifted, reassured, or validated in some way.) Also, this may have meant that you were questioning/debating your life path and where it was leading, at that time in your life.
The fact that the building had no walls/ceilings would imply that there was no barrier or boundaries on your progress in life or you way of thinking. (Being open minded.)
Wearing a hat in a dream signifies hiding as aspect of oneself or the act of covering something up. In this situation, it was the DC that was wearing the hat, and the only conclusion I can draw is that this DC represented a person or situation in your waking life that you felt was not being fully honest, open or up front with you about or a situation that was not quite clear to you.
Same goes for the robe, this represents personal issues that may need to be confronted or secret desires of needing to let loose. The DC, in a sense, may have been a reflection of you, or how your subconscious saw you and how it felt you needed to change? It depends upon how you felt about yourself during this time.
(*Not that the DC actually was, but you said he looked "like" a wizard... if indeed there is a wizard in a dream, it may indicate that one is trying to hone in on their skills and to exercise individual power)
Seeing a killer in your dream may have suggested that an essential aspect to your emotions may have been cut off. (As if feeling like you would be losing your identity or individuality.) This can also represent the healing process from some situation and purification, possibly to the effect of standing up for oneself and putting an end to something.
Along with this, your own death in a dream can be a sign of a transitional phase in your life, becoming more spiritual or enlightened. (Alternatively it may also mean one is desperately trying to escape demands of their daily life.... but it the way that the rest of these dream signs are turning out, I think the first part is more applicable, but like I said, it depends upon your waking life at that time.)
Dreaming of being murdered can represent some significant relationship has been severed and you may have been trying to disconnect yourself from your emotions, or this sign can also represent your unused talents.
Okay, now some of the little additional things...
Dreaming that you are in pain means that you are being too hard on yourself in regards to a situation that was out of your control. (The only exception to this, of course, would be if you were in real actual physical pain in your body)
On the flipside, feeling numbness in a dream actually does signify illness or unfavorable conditions in one's health.
Feeling peace in a dream indicates and end/resolution to an inner conflict or emotional issue, or like the end of a cycle and the pause before the beginning of a new endeavor.
As for the pitchfork, the act itself, not the object, of being "stabbed" would indicate a struggle with power, like experiencing feelings of inadequacy and defensiveness, or feeling betrayed.
I really hopes this helps to explain or shed light on the darkness of confusion for this dream for you...
Pretty interesting though, the teenage years are never easy for anyone growing up, these are our formidable years, a time of gaining a stable balance on the world and life.
