      Derren Brown predicts lottery numbers

Is anyone going to watch it?
He is going to predict the lottery numbers as they are being drawn, then he is going to show you how he did it.

      http://vimeo.com/6457581

Apparently Channel 4 has banned him from buying any tickets due to the likelihood of him getting them right.

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...--tell-it.html

Edit - The draw is tonight. I will post the results for the benefit of the American members.

So does that mean if you were watching him predict the numbers you could get a lottery ticket yourself with the same numbers and win?

He is going to predict them literally seconds before the draw from what I gather. I think there is a cut off time before the draw so its impossible for someone to use his numbers.

As for recording, I am pretty sure that if he gets it right that it will be on youtube faster than a pedo in a playpark.

I think it will require a lot of back work. He will tell you how he did it but I think it will be harder than you think.

I wonder what the company who runs the lottery think about this? Maybe its a marketing scam to get more people to buy tickets.

I'm sorry guys, but I have the dumb right now so help me.

      A website (here) says this:

"In a television broadcast first, C4 will show the first event live across its entire network (excluding the +1 Channels). At 10.35pm on Wednesday 9th September, Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4 and 4Music will all screen The Event. Channel4.com will stream The Event at channel4.com/derrenbrown via MSN Messenger."

Does that mean I will be able to see online it or not? Thanks.

It is referring to this -

If you have windows live messenger then you can view it via the advert at the bottom. But I don't know if this applies to people outside of the UK,

why is there a brick wall behind him in that photo? doesn't look like the set for where the numbers are drawn looks more like he did this at his house or something.

That is because the lottery is shown on the BBC network and Derren works for Channel Four.
He is not allowed to appear on any other channel due to his contract.
He did it on a stage next to a tv which was playing BBC live.

My guess would be that he used a time-honoured betting scam called "Past Posting". The numbers had already been drawn before he "predicted" them. Not too difficult to do, either, as there is no such thing as truly "Live TV". There is always a delay between the event happening and the TV reception thereof.

I found this out when I was watching the "Live" FA Cup Final once, during which I telephoned a friend of mine who was actually at the match. The so-called "live" feed on TV was seconds behind the action described over the telephone.

So.. he could have done it with a "stooge" in the BBC Lottery Programme audience, feeding him the numbers before the broadcast reached the masses.

It's basically the same scam that was used in the film "The Sting". That'd be my guess, and I stress that it's only a guess.

Most TV delays are 7 seconds, which I don't believe is quite long enough to set that up. (Did you watch the youtube vid?) The prediction was made earlier in the day, so his numbers were beside him before the lottery even began showing. Beyond that, he specifically stated that the BBC does not delay the lottery at all. It is broadcast to the second. I don't know how true the statement is, but maybe it's something you want to look up before settling on that guess.

There is obviously some trick to it, no one could predict the exact numbers otherwise he would be doing the lottery every week - and winning every week.

I think you will be able to predict the numbers if you had a record of all the past lottery numbers.

no i dont, because they are completely random. If you set up a computer program that created a lottery simulation and had it collect the numbers for the equilvalent of 100+ years, it still wouldn't be able to accurately predict what numbers would be next.

His trick had nothing to do with computer simulation of any kind, I am sure of that.

Really? And, given the probability that all of the past numbers don't show any sort of sequence or pattern (being that they are random), how would probability explain being able to predict the numbers?

It is more probable for a new sequence to be chosen than one that has already been picked. if he had enough information, he could start ruling out some sequences and try to guess the next one. That's probably not what he did, though.

I don't know. I just don't see how that's possible. The lottery has only run for so many years, and he is only so many years old. How many different combinations can come out of a 6-digit sequence of 50 possible numbers? How feasible is predicting the next set of numbers, to a T?

It just sounds pretty outlandish to me. Of course, so does "predicting" all the numbers. But still. I'm just saying that they both seem just as improbable, to me.
