I certainly can not wait for FF14. I believe it's headed for a June release date. I'll most likely be picking that up sometime when it comes out.

Whoa that comes out in 2 days? Wow that snuck up on me lol. I wish I had enough money to buy it. Looks like its going to be a very beautiful/awesome game. I believe I've been deprived though because I've only played FFX. I've heard a lot about FF7 and I really wanted to play it but I never got a chance.

The battle system sounds great, but I've been reading that the exploration is pretty limited/linear. Nobuo Uematsu is no where in the sound department either. It's like they keep trying to add new things while throwing out the old stuff that worked. I really hope the game turns out great, but it sounds like they're making it for the casual crowd.

Hows the prospect of replay value looking? I liked the previous final fantasy games (mainly 8 and the two 10s) because of the ability to replay it without being bored. XII (the one with vaahn and the bunny eared chick) had one of the worst replay values if you ask me. X-2 actually had one of the most interesting replay systems, though some viewed the ability to retain experience in classes as a negative and not a plus. I have to say I really liked the skills system for 10 and 10-2, but whatever. So how is it looking? Is the story any good? Do you feel invested in the characters? XII left me wanting the damn thing to be over about 25 minutes into it. Absolutely hated almost all of the characters. Minigames worthwhile?

Yeah, there won't be any minigame. Well, if you consider chocobo riding a minigame ... But don't worry, you'll come back for more once you beat it, there are tons of side quests to do. For me, anyway.

27 hours in, some parts are really fun, some parts are boring.

Been hearing that the story/characters are cliche and predictable even though the combat is really fresh. Any truth to that?

^I wouldn't doubt it, especially as far as the game's women go. I haven't played this game yet - nor do I plan to in the near future, until the price drops substantially - but here's my impression of the lady folk of FFXIII at a glance: The main character Lightning (godawful name, innit?) seems like she would fit the "The Strong Woman Figure" type...like Rydia, Faris, Celes, Tifa, Quistis, Beatrix, Lulu, Fran, etc. Vanille is definitely the "Obnoxiously Plucky Young Girl" archetype...Young Rydia, Krile, Relm, Yuffie, Selphie, Eiko, Rikku, Penelo, etc. In fact, I can't help but feel that they made Vanille a veritable clone of Rikku in an attempt to capitalize on the (for SOME reason) mass popularity of the latter character. And at last, Fang will probably fall into the "Kind-Hearted/Fragile Young Woman" category, just as Rosa, Lenna, Terra, Aeris, Rinoa, Garnet, Yuna, and Ashe before her. Yeah...there's no way this ISN'T going to be cliche beyond belief. Thing is, though, people didn't really start considering these character archetypes as cliche until after FFX. Back then, I guess, these archetypes were regarded as classic...but now, it's just getting ridiculous and repetitive.

Eight hours in and I've been trekking the same single linear line. I feel at times like I've been tricked into buying a very long movie disguised as a game. Worse in that respect than MGS4. The story is very engaging but I can see it growing progressively more stale as I realize just how little choice I have in the progression of the characters. I mean I can't even decide who is or is not in my party and the lack of side quests discourages improving much beyond the status quo. This may change later on but come on. Impressions so far... 7/10. Worth 40 bucks no question. Could be 50. Not 60. By the way, I thought the characters were pretty fresh. Especially Lightning when compared with the main characters from IX, X and XII.

I'd love for someone to prove my doubts about this game wrong, but...I don't think that's possible now. I've already seen two reputable video game reviewers say that this game is disappointingly linear, just like GA's saying. Apparently it's not the smash hit Squenix was hoping for, since the game has already started hitting the bargain bins in Japan...no way in hell I'M gonna waste $60 on it. Not even $50. They should retitle this game Final Fantasy XIII: The Death of a Franchise. I think what the problem is is that RPGs these days focus too heavily on story/character interaction and not enough on gameplay. These RPGs have become, as you say, more like movies disguised as games (*cough*XENOSAGA*cough*). That's not fun. It's barely even entertaining. When I'm playing a game, I want to...you know...play it.
