Rep. Lamar Smith pulls SOPA; pushes "Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act."

SOPA Is Defeated, But New Internet Bill Gains Critics | DrJays.com Live | Fashion. Music. Lifestyle

The law would require ISP's to maintain records of every customer's browsing history and file transfer data. That sounds... just wonderful right?

(Didn't something like this go through in Australia?)

I hope it didn't. They're pushing this one because "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?!" will be enough to convince most people that this is totally different from that nasty bill SOPA that they read about when they couldn't get on Wikipedia.

We just need to tell people that their ISP (and the government) will now see their browsing history and downloads/uploads.

You'd think this would require a lot of space to store on the side of the ISP...

Sadly, this bill will pass because Google, Facebook, Twitter, wikipedia, etc. dont give a fuck about it. And therefore, neither will the people.

America, will you play the Roman fool and die by your own sword? Or will you stand and fight in the face of your horror?

Haha, yet again these idiots fail because they have no grasp of the technology.

Storing all that information is not feasible (it's a huge amount of data), users could generate 'useless' extra traffic to swamp it, and it's easily evaded via proxy servers. IP addresses are not a reliable method of determining identity (due to insecure networks, they can be spoofed, etc.)

It's worrying to see this kind of stuff, but still at least the ineptitude of the politicians will prevent it from coming to fruition.

This bill is supremely worrying simply because the New Speak label will be enough to convince many politicians to vote for it.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

USA PATRIOT Act! It has both USA and Patriot in it! IF YOU VOTE AGAINST IT YOU WANT CHILDREN TO BE FORCED TO PARTICIPATE IN PORNOGRAPHY D:

Precisely. I thought that's what the Republic was for, but our politicians are just as gullible as anyone else.

Blame the sheeple who will let it pass. This week we proved that public outcry can kill a bill. So where's the public outcry now?

People only have so much public outcry in them every month.

But I mean seriously, eventually there will be no way to rebel even if we all wanted to because the technology is advancing too far forward. Our government has all the technology, and they're willing to use it against us. We will lose our ability to fight back.

"If there was hope, it must lie in the Proles."

There will always be dissenters and rebels, there will always be ways to fight back. In the grand scheme, this government will collapse either through "no confidence" (since Pedophiles have a higher approval rating than our Congress), or through a financial collapse. I wouldn't worry TOO much about it; people are fed up NOW and becoming more active NOW (think of OWS, and even moreso in the Arab Spring revolts). The extent of control by technology would be genocide... which ultimately leaves no one to rule. Tyranny ebbs and flows; it won't last forever, we may just be the unfortunate generation who has to endure the tyranny (if not us, who? Our children?)

This sounds a bit hopeless to me... yes? Meh. Maybe it's all of the books that I've read and movies that I've watched, but I have faith in the people when the time comes. A bit of a romantic outlook maybe.

Anyone else noticed that all the upload sites are now cracking down hardcore on illegal files?
Seriously, every link I've been to is dead.
One site even said that you can no longer share files, only access ones that you have uploaded personally.
Pretty scary. Guess their scare tactics worked this time....

I am thinking of OWS and the Arab Spring Revolts, and I'm trying to think positive but the London Riots didn't teach the cops to practice restraint, it taught them they need to develop new crowd control weapons. As far as Arab Spring is concerned, it seems for every inch of ground taken for the people, a thousand are sacrificed. Governments of the world are not learning how to better listen, they're learning how to better control.

Hope in the people, or no hope?

If you have hope, you have a reason to overcome. If you have no hope left, then you have no reason to try.
