I was actually specifically referring to Internal sounds heared usually in the sound of someone's voice. It is actually more reminscent to thought-forms as actual hallucinations. But on the other hand, I also experience music. Mostly music that I have danced to for extremely long periods of time (30 minutes +), but not limited to this. This suggests to me a muscle memory a.k.a. Acetylcholine system. An emotional load also seems to help. Very sometimes this music seems to be coming from external but usually it is very clearly an internal hallucination. I have audible hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis or Drug-induced, these ones are more hyper-real and confusing. There is a difference. But nice to know there is such a wide disparity of experiences. One time I was hearing GOA music for hours on-end and fell into Sleep Paralysis. I actually had a dream-like thought that I was having my stereo too loud and clearly heared stairs (even though i don't have one) and people knocking on my door and thought they would literally break my huge door that's how loud it was. Only to awaken and realize my stereo was off. The reason I share this because here is a clear link between my internal hallucinations and a dream-like experience.

Also want to say something about Muscle twitches, Magnesium Calcium Potassium.

Hmmm, well Dthoughts, I know the sounds I was hearing were echo's of real sounds that were coming from an internal source. maybe the memory of sounds are amplified and not able to shut off due to neuro transmission problems for what ever reason. I know that hearing sounds that are not actually there is a hallmark of schizophrenia and also Alzheimer's, and occurs in other mental illnesses, which is kind of sad. Knowing that my only diagnosis were, sleep deprivation/ insomnia, depression and anxiety disorder, the ladder two probably being a byproduct of not enough sleep, I find it really frustrating that it could have been resolved so much sooner and for a fraction of a fraction of what was spent on Dr's and prescriptions and hospital stays. The interesting thing about magnesium is that is helps calcium to be utilized in the body. It makes me wonder if the type of plaques that build up in arteries and in the brain that leads to strokes and Alzheimer's could be prevented in part by keeping optimal magnesium levels in the body. Another interesting thing I found with magnesium is that if you sweat a lot, you lose more mag and most sports drinks put back more potassium than mag. I do break a sweat easily, when working out, I just get drenched! I also have a inherited condition, where I perspire on my head and face way more than most people. So when I started taking the magnesium supplements, I had less facial perspiration and it really helped my self esteem.
So I know this is just personal anecdotal info, but hopefully it can help you get answers for your question or spark you and others to dig up more good info.

Hi Dthoughts, sorry to hear this is bothering you!
Do you mean it as you say here, that you hear them constantly, not only when sleep-deprived?

Especially when sleep deprived after one day or so while lying down there's constant chatter in the voices of people I talked to in the previous days.. It gets really annoying when it also happens during non-sleep related activities.
Sorry if this is intrusive, but do you mean anytime you lie down, seems you indicate these voices are disturbing activities, which should be very private and pleasurable?

Any thoughts on this or does anyone know of research done in this area? I know it's a very common feature in humans.
Hearing voices while severely sleep deprived, yes, this can happen, but you said it's constantly and only gets more so, when you are relaxing, then that wouldn't be so common. Do you WILD from time to time? Hearing things while you go into a dream while still conscious seems to be happening to people a lot, but it's not what you are getting at, I suppose.
A question: why are you sleep deprived, and how long are you awake in one row? Do you maybe consume substances while staying up all night or in general? If so, like partying on the weekend, I would advise you to take a complete pause from all intake of psychoactive substances for one week, and see how you are doing then. Well - except you have to take something on prescription, if you do, you might want to consult your doc, some medications can cause this as well.

I can only think of Jung's therapy in which he talks to friends inside his head to resolve conflict but this seems different in way because the voices aren't really that responsive (or maybe they are, I dont know). But when ignoring it they just go on and on and on.
It very much sounds like an issue with neurotransmitters in your brain, not like conflicts you play out in your mind. As you say - they are not responsive, so it's not likely there's an inner "psycho-theater" for resolving conflicts going on.
There is a movement, which is all about how to deal with voices, or even profit from them, you might want to take a look at that:
Hearing Voices Movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But if you want an opinion from me - most likely either induced by psychoactive substances, and if not that it could be a classical psychiatric phenomenon. If it does bother you and influences you negatively (which I imagine it does, it would nerve me no end, I guess), I think, you'd be best advised to find a professional, a physician, you can really trust, and carefully try to get a handle on it with medication.
Neuroleptica aren't the same anymore as they were two decades ago, you can have a silencing of voices with a low dose and without side-effects, a good psychiatrist will be able to do that, without impairing you in another way in exchange for the voices.

      - Take care of what robs you of your sleep
      - Make a break of one week from all psychoactive substances
      - if that doesn't help - consult a doc of your trust (check reviews of patients on the net)

Kadie, you are like ram. You go head in, no wonder you perspire once in a while. I forgot to thank you for your postings. I just added in some edits and all but aspired to do some personal thanks later. So for the third time thanks because your posts are actually extremely helpful cus it's not often you get to hear such life-long lessons learned. And actually i have some bio-active magnesium and B6, I took them right after you advised it and has removed every sort of background noise in my brain even though I had been a little sleep deprived. And it's not like im imsomniac but I get simply overstimulated from Social Media, Music etc. I just don't want to sleep at times. This has been a life-long pattern and has made actually going to sleep a lot harder this time around. Lately there's been no problems though. I choose when I sleep and I choose when I'm awake. I just choose to stay awake more often than I sleep More awareness of what I eat has been a tremendous help.
Going to reply to StephL after I calm my mind a little bit. Be prepared for a more emotional unloading.. perhaps.. I am touching upon some negatives from my life even though I am feeling perfectly fine to a much greater extent but sometimes it's hard to face that negatives are affecting me even at this present moment. I didn't intend this thread to be about me but since you guys brought it up So I try to stay calm and hopefully find a more lucid perspective. I am happy. Also going to find more research that's for sure.
