Just like to say, that when I went to an American International school for three years, the sex education we had there was incredibly in-depth, and not reliant on scare tactics at all. Our teacher told us about all the sex positions, how lesbians have sex, about sex toys and techniques, and masturbation and all that stuff. Everything, pretty much. We brought in bananas and put condoms on them, and got a pretty positive vibe about the whole issue.
When I returned to my native Scotland, the sex ed consisted of one 40-minute class (as in, just one in the history of your school life) where the nurse said "Don't do anal sex, use lubrication and a condom, and remember, sex isn't fun." Then she put a condom on a dildo. That was it.
I definitely think that information is the key - but it needs to be positive information. Give kids all the information about sex, as well as safe sex, and they'll get the message through this positive reinforcement.
