Are you proud of your country?

Some say that you should have pride in your country, others say it's ridiculous because you never chose which country you were born in/live in.

I'm half and half. I am proud of my country, in the sense that being Canadian is part of who I am and I should be proud of myself (to a degree). On the other hand, I would be just as proud as if I were born in another country, so really it shouldn't matter much.

We killed thousands of Indians, yet we also killed thousands of Nazis.

I'd say about half and half.

What are you talking about? We didn't kill any Indians, our ancestors did.

I meant to convey a point about our imperfect history as a nation. This and a bunch of other stuff conviently goes unmentioned when listing what we've done throughout our over-200-year history.

America is fairly decent, but about 50% of the people in it drive me bananas, and a nice chunk of the politics involved is maddening. Half-and-half.

      well, not my ancestors.

what does it mean to say you are proud of your country?

if it's based on heritage, i don't identify with being 'american.' like many other people here, i have no ethnic connection to this term, aside from a small amount of native ancestry.

if it's based on governance, absolutely not. the american system of government replaced indigenous forms which i believe to be ideal. the relatively short history of the united states to me is an exercise of manifest destiny.

but i am proud of how there are so many opportunities for many different people here. i am fortunate to live in a place where my life is relatively easy.

I put no, because things are so messed up in our country. We have strayed so far from our ideals, its hard to say I am proud about it.

I support the advance of the human condition as a whole.
Pride in one's nation is a silly concept.

I wouldn't say I was proud, but I certainly love the country I live in. For me its more a matter of culture, not nationality. I like English culture, I like footy at the pub on a sunday, I like full english breakfasts, and in general I like the people. In respect to the history of the nation, why should I be proud of that? I didn't do any of that, I wasn't even born. Foreign policy? It disgusts me. But like I said I love the people and the culture, and that's enough for me.

Were full of hillbillies, but we got the best pizza in the world. We impeached a president for lying about getting a blowjob, but not for committing war crimes; but we have the best colleges in the world. We have an extremely abusive military and no health coverage, but money to take holidays in other places. I'm half proud, but I will be cheering for England next summer though.

I was pretty proud that we were able to rise above fear and petty prejudice (not least of all anti-intellectualism) in the last election. It let me be proud again of living in the first nation founded upon the basis of humanism, democracy and self-determination, by reawakening hope that the American Revolution still has some steam. We had an imperfect grasp of those principles from the start, and we've blundered considerably, but we also provided much of the inspiration for the people of the world to get out from under the thumbs of kings and tyrants. I suppose I'm not thrilled with our international behavior post-WWII, when we decided we're Team America World Police.

So yes, America, I'm proud, but I expect more from you :sterndadlook:
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I am proud to be Canadian. Taking pride in the nation itself, though, that's different.

As much as I hate to say it, I'm not proud of America right now.

Th following analogy is worst case scenario, and I'm not sayin git applies to everyone so don't be offended.

Fat lazy people with so much wealth and talent at their disposal, and half of them really on the government to supply them with money. We are in such debt wasting money on such worthless things, and I think we're in over our heads in trouble.
