When you remember dreams and write them down, do you ever forget them?

I have 36 entries in my DJ, and there are about a total of 50 unique dreams in my DJ. Every single dream I can recall beginning to end, no problem. So do you ever actually forget your dreams once you remember them and write them down?

It depends. I can't remember them spontaneously on the spot if you were to ask me, but if I were to take a glance at my dream journal entries, I might be able to remember the full dream. I'm kind of absent-minded, I even forget what I ate during the day so recalling all my dreams without any help is almost impossible.

      lomba,

It's funny that you posted this today. I was looking through my journal yesterday and came across some dreams that I didn't remember at first. When I read the titles I was like,"I didn't write these." I read through the few dreams that I had forgotten. In all the dreams I had forgotten, I only had to read the first few lines and the entire dream would come back to memory. A dream journal is a powerful tool. When I read and look back on my dream memories, they seem as real as my waking ones.

Yes. That is exactly how it is for me. All I need is the title or the first line and I remember the whole dream. Crazy stuff

Pretty much the same for me. I even forget that I have written down my dreams sometimes. But once I have something to jog my memory I can remember them ok.

Eventually, yes, you usually do. Writing down your dreams can keep them in your memory for a while but the details do eventually fade away. You eventually just remember some basic things that happened in the dream and sometimes forget it eventually. One you start writing them down though, they stick in your memory. I agree that dreams are hard to forget once written down.

I usually wake up in the middle of the night and write down three or four things about a dream. Sometimes I will wake up and see something like: Water Dungeon, Dad and Me, trying to escape.

Sometimes I will have absolutely no memory of my dad being in there until I read it. And very occasionally I won't ever remember it. It's weird.

I have a better memory of the lucids I've had since I have so few of them. But I can't possibly remember all of the entries I've posted with non-lucids, maybe a few key ones. They sort of pop into my head randomly at times. But other than that, if I wake up at a horrible time, like only 1-2 hours of sleep, and I get lazy and write down some note, I would forget it, though that's only happened in one case.

I entered something related to girls wearing bunny outfits and tentacles months ago, and I have yet to remember what the dream was actually about.

All the time, every time I look at my dream journal I see at the least one dream that I couldn't what so ever recall before reading about it.
But after i read about it, it seems obvious.

Obvious just like when you are going throughout your day and you remember a key element about a dream in the night that you somehow forgot.

I have a book for notes, and a dream journal, so in the night I write notes and in the morning I write out the full dream. I remember all the entries in my dream journal, but my notebook, I can never remember things.

I have forgotten many dreams I have written down, but most I can immediately recall after reading them. So I guess they are dormant, if you will.

Yes I agree, I would say that once writing down a dream into a journal it becomes part of your long-term memory so you will never forget.

Glad we can all agree on something. Even tho out of about 45 dreams within the last 1-2 months, there are like 2 that had little detail to begin with that I do not remember.
I have become quite interested on the layers of lucidity, and I use them to measure how lucid a dream is. For more information on these layers, click here.

I was looking through some dream journal entries from about a year ago, and most of them I remember at least somewhat after having my memory jogged, but others I don't remember at all. Most of the ones I don't remember are the shorter entries where I didn't remember much even when I wrote it, but sometimes even ones with a fair amount of detail I don't remember.

Yes. I've written down dreams in a journal, forgot about them, and then happened to read the journal as long as 3+ years later. The dreams comes back like a memory. That's why I know there is much to learn from dreaming. They are actual memories. Same as memory's you acquire whilst awake.

Once I remember a dream, I never forget it. I still remember dreams from when I was 5!
