Interesting Idea for a dream machine.

Okay I know this isn't really impossible. But it might be possible, I don't know. Imagine going to bed wearing a helmet (Or some other device that is comfortable) and dreaming. When you wake up and you take off the device you can watch the dream you just had on its screen. You can choose to save the dream if you like it or delete if you don't want it. It even has wifi-enabled so you can upload the dream you just had to youtube and other video hosting sites. What do you guys think? Will something like this ever be possible?

Only if something can interpret brain signals and convert them to video & sound.

Most likely, yes. Some scientists already have machines capable of interpreting brain signals into video, however it's only simple shapes and is pretty blurry.

And these wouldn't be used for dreams. THese would be 100% foolproof lie detectors. Trying to lie to one of those is like saying "don't think of an elephant". "oh wait.."

considering the rapid technological improvements over the last few years, I think this will be possible in less than 15 years.

It would cost millions. Only militaries, courthouses, government establishments, and movie directors would have them, maybe scientists. I could see James Cameron just recording his vision of it and playing it on a projector.

It would have to be extremely advanced and adaptable tech. It would require a perfect understanding of the sensory strip in the brain and where the different parts are located. Also how the signal is modulated etc.. It would also require an implant of at least 1 device for each sense to get any sort of decent signal strength and that would likely cause the person to lose the strength of their senses and make their dreams less vivid as well as waking life. The implants would need to be powered by something and would need to be extremely small and be able to communicate with a device outside of the skull which would then make useful data out of it. There would likely be some pretty bad side effects besides the loss of intensity of the senses.

If any type of technology like this were possible it would take the technology of the type of civilization that has highly advanced space age tech. It would likely only have it's uses in screwing people up in the process of forcing information out of them. Because no sane person would let people cut open their head and implant things into it if all they will get out of it are some images.

Point is don't expect anything soon or even this century, if this civilization ever even reaches that point. The thing that was done with the MRI isn't even a high school science experiment compared to what is needed. It isn't even proof of concept really. They had to know what the picture looked like first and map how blood flow in the brain reacted to the image I believe.

Anyway I'm rambling but you can see what I'm trying to say.

Yeah, but if the could make it with the implants but make it so that it didn't have any bad side effects that would be cool. We still only at the beginning of what we can make technology wise. Technology will only get better and better. Nothing is impossible if we set our minds to it. No pun intented lol. About what you said about the thing messing up the senses and stuff, you should read the book "The Last Book in the Universe". In the book theres these people that plug themselves into this brain set thing and they live out their fantasies and such, but the more they use, the more unhealthy the become and their this one guy in their that uses it all the time and he can't even use his real body, he's like a vegetable. But if we could make it so that didn't happen, the Dream Machine would be a pretty cool piece of technology.

What if our dreams look like random images, you know?

Oh, it's 12:00 midnight. And now a carnival is parading up the street. Wait- I'm being whisked to another dimension. Help! Monsters!

Our dreams aren't just random images. Their other worlds that we are "immersed" in. They may not be real worlds, just the worlds of the inner working of our mind but they are still more than an "image".

What if implants weren't needed? Couldn't it work if a scientist/s were to make scanners of a sort, maybe study the brain to figure out how dreams work and where the senses are and find a way to scan the brain , taking the data, analyzing it and then turning it into video and sound, or mayhaps a way to do that and record it like a video camera?
