I think you normally "awoke" the same amount of times as you do now.

Your sleep consists out of several stages some deep sleep stages and some almost awake stages. In my theory when you used to have a dream and woke up after it you just didn't care and slept on, causing you to not remember that you had awoken at all. But now that you do care about those dreams you want to remember them and write them down, which makes you aware of waking up, and so it seems like you wake up a lot more then you normally did, but you actually don't.
