I think usually about 6 hours of sleep, maybe a little less (it's a bit different for different people) is recommended. So if you sleep at 3am, set your alarm for 9am. Any multiple of 1.5 hours or so after falling asleep, so you can hit the beginning of a REM cycle. REM periods become longer as the night goes on, so it's best to do it later in the sleep cycle, after 4.5 or 6 hours of sleep.
I haven't heard that the actual time of day should make a difference, only how long you've been sleeping for.
