I think what you're describing is the difference between REM dreams and non-REM dreams. REM dreams tend to be action packed and exciting, while their non-REM counterparts tend to be more dull. When WILDing, you haven't had a chance to enter the REM state yet. With DILDing, the odds are you are already in a REM phase, and it's that intense dream imagery that tipped you off that you were dreaming.
I believe that we are not slaves to our sleep cycles, and that you can kick start a REM cycle whenever you feel like it. Next time you WILD, start smashing shit, jump around doing Jedi moves, or just start flying. That should be enough to kick start a REM cycle, providing the dream intensity you're looking for.
