      Question Reality Checks

... I tend to talk a lot. So this post is a bit bigger than I originally intended xD

Just a general question on RCs.

Inception originally gave me this idea. I wanted a "Totem" of sorts, that I could check daily to make sure I wasn't dreaming. However, I know the totems have a slightly different purpose in the movie. A Spinning Top or a Loaded Dice wouldn't exactly work the same.

Originally I had the idea of an empty locket. I had a small tiny piece of paper folded up inside of it, with a quote written on it. I wore the locket around my neck. When I RC'd in a dream, I expected the words on the paper to be mashed up and distorted.

      The locket broke.

So, to substitute for a bit, I've been writing the word "Reality" on the palm of my hand. That way, when I see my hand throughout the day - I know I'm not dreaming. When I see it, I'm reminded to glance at it twice and actually /do/ the reality checks.

I started thinking about this earlier today. Could this idea ultimately turn against me? If my subconscious mind knows to expect the word "Reality" to be written cleanly on my hand, wouldn't that transfer over into the dreams?

=/ Any better ideas for a RC or "Totem"? Or should I stick with what I've been doing?

You can't go wrong with the good old nose pinch.
The best thing about it is that when you do it irl, you don't look like a nut, just looks like you're having a scratch!
Pinch your nostrils together and try to breathe through your nose. If you can't you're not dreaming and if you can then you're dreaming. And it feels freakin' trippy when you do it in a dream too because of your mind fucking with you, you can actually FEEL that your nostrils are closed.
      GOALS:
      - Watch a REALLY big Hawk named Alejandro peck Lady Gaga's face off [ ]
      - Ask a dream character what they thought of Inception [ ]
      - Write an intro and verse of an original song on guitar, remember it, play it IWL [ ]
      - Become Blade. Shit all over every vampire movie ever made. Wipe my ass with Edward Cullen [ ]
      - Live on the Moon. Watch the countries of Earth nuke each other out of existence [ ]

Well I think this can't turn against you, if you just use this word as a reminder of reality checking than it should work.
So everytime you see the word reality you would be reminded to RC and even when it transfers into you dreams you would still do
a reality check as soon as you notice the word on your hand.

The whole Totem idea of the word not being there in dream will probably not work in my opinion.

I look at my hands, do the nose pinch or poke my finger through my hands. If the hands have more than 5 fingers and/or are warping and distorting around, then it's a dream. If the finger goes through the hands, then it's a dream.

I like the idea of the nose pinch/hand thing, the only problem is: I wouldn't be reminded to do those during the day. For awhile, I think I'd need something to visually remind me to Reality Check. I'd be reminded by the necklace (before it broke) because I could feel it around my neck. And the word "reality" on my hand, because I'll see it from time to time.

The nosepinch/hand ideas are good for after you've done the initial reality check, but I think I'd need something more just to simply remind me daily to do it. Make sense?

Some people wear a watch that goes off every hour and do a reality check then. Others do it whenever they see anything that might seem wierd. Personally, I do it whenever there is a mjor scenery change, such as walking outside or walking into a different room. Also, get it in the habit of doing reality checks whenever you wake up, because it might be a false awakening, which you can use to get lucid

I use the finger poke through my hand, or instead of writing reality on your palm you could write RC on the back of your hand. I do that. some good rc's involve use of technology and looking at text. just make sure your rc isn't something like jumping out a window. hahah

I had the idea recently to use a hair tie, keep it around my wrist, and throughout the day slide my finger under it and try to melt my finger through it. I figure that in a dream, it would be pretty easy to do.

      define "weird"
They say dreaming is dead, no one does it anymore.
It's not dead it's just that it's been forgotten, removed from our language.
Nobody teaches it so nobody knows it exists.
The dreamer is banished to obscurity.
Well, I'm trying to change all that, and I hope you are too.
      By dreaming, every day.
