      Why can't I lucid dream

I keep trying to lucid dream but keep failing. How come I can't lucid dream? I ordered exploring the world of lucid dreaming by stephen la berge, and read most of the book, all the parts I needed but not all. I tried asking my self "am I dreaming" and then looking at writing twice to see if it said the same thing twice. If it did I would say "I am not dreaming". I did it every 15 minutes all day and then went to bed. It did not work so I quit doing it. If I did it all day it should of worked and it did not so I figured it wont work on me.

Then I tried WILDS. I would set my alarm to go off at 3AM if falling a sleep at 12AM. I did it at 3AM time so I would not have to get up to pee, because I cant fall back to sleep while doing a WILD if I got up to pee. So as soon as the alarm goes off i turn it off without leaving my bed. Then I do a WILD and fall asleep while doing a WILD. It only takes me about 5 minutes to fall a sleep doing a WILD.

The WILDS I did are as follows. I did the watch what thoughts go through your mind as an observer WILD. I did the counting WILD "1 I am dreaming", "2 I am dreaming" ect. I did the imagine a white ball of light in between your eyebrows WILD. I keep trying and failing. How come you guys can have Lucid dreams and I can't? Am I doing something wrong? if I am what is it?

Lucid dreaming just like any other skill, takes practice. Maybe you're trying too hard.
How long have you been doing those reality checks (asking yourself if you're dreaming and looking at the writings)?

I've not had LD myself yet but just be persistent, don't give up.

The problem is that you are looking at lucid dreaming like it can always be accomplished if you follow certain precise steps. It doesn't work like that. Certain things may work for you that don't work for other people and vice-versa. To me it sounds like you tried for like two days. If you have never had a lucid dream before than it may take quite a bit of time to have your first one. You need to be patient. I for one cannot WILD to save my life. So just don't be discouraged.

I have heard a lot of people claim they have lucid dreams 9 out of 10 nights. And I can't even have 1.

Those are the people who have a lot of experience with lucid dreaming.
Let's say if a professional runner tells you he can run 50miles without stopping, you can't expect yourself to do the same thing. If you know what I mean, but with practice you can reach that point someday.

dude, ive had like 4 in 7 years. just practice, stay motivated, and you will get one. i promise. its just like any other skill.

The evening hangs beneath the moon, a silver thread on darkened dune.
With closing eyes and resting head; I know that sleep is coming soon.

Upon my pillow, safe in bed,
A thousand pictures fill my head,

      I cannot sleep , my mids aflight;
and yet my limbs seems made of lead.

One problem is your reality check. You do something. And then tell yourself that your not dreaming. Here is what you should do.

Plug your nose and try to breath. If you can breath your dreaming. (Have fun.) If your cam not breath than move to step 2. Loom around the room and really question if your dreaming. Look for something weird. Or out of the ordinary. Ask yourself how you got to where you are.

If you do all of this and find out that you are not dreaming. Then DON'T tell yourself your not dreaming. Just carry on untill your next reality check.

I was always a dreamer, in childhood especially. People thought I was a little strange.-Charley pride

Everyone eventually finds what works for them. I use visualization combined with deep relaxation techniques. Don't worry... you will find your method.

It took me 4 months until I had my first real lucid dream and I learned your mindset is very important. You have to be confident and believe you can lucid dream. Just keep practing good luck!

This is true, I have nightmares a lot and when I know something scary is happening or there is a scary setting I'm usually like 'Oh it's a dream!!' and then my DILD kicks in.. The thing is, I used this technique before I even discovered this site. My point is, NakedAlbino, is find your own technique, try to do something to make you realize you're dreaming. If that makes sense.. :/ I don't ever want to try to WILD, It seems very frightening, lol.

Did you start writing your dreams down? I feel that's like the first thing that you should be doing even before you think about reality checking and different techniques.

Yeah I write my dreams down. I had a DILD last night after following dakohtanok's advice. thanks dakohtanok. I am pissed though because it ended early because my dad woke me up He wakes me up all the time and it pisses me off. Now I need to start researching so I can LD at least 50% of nights.

To summarize all the good points so far:

-Do the plug your nose reality check. For most people it's the most reliable.
-Write a dream journal, to bump up recall and overall number of dreams.
-Don't get stressed, if you do, you will fail.
-Work out your REM, then set your alarm for then. It's about 5 hours after you fall asleep, not three, but it may be different for you, I don't know.

I just had my first lucid last night, after 4 months of hard practice. I tried MILD, DILD, WBTB, DEILD, ADA, Apple juice, R.C.s, breaks and Mantras. All failed, until I just set the intention into my head, and really focused on my goal, and kept repeating it to myself. It was the main topic on my mind last night.

You (so far as I can tell from your info) have only started this month, and have already had a lucid so far, even if it's just a small one. That's good. I remember getting really really annoyed at constant failure (if you dig deep enough you can find my tantrum topics). Just keep at it, keep focused and keep trying.

They say the more we have the easier it gets. So it looks like things will keep getting better and better for us.

Wait until something so unusual or preposterous happens in a normal dream: then question why you are experiencing or seeing this. Dreams are so convincing, this can be difficult, but it's how I eventually discovered Lucid Dreaming by accident. If you ever do realize you are dreaming, that's the only step you need......I suggest just 'walking around ' inside the dream first, and experience/touch things: that in itself is quite an experience.

However if you want to be more adventurous, jump off a building if you see one: you can't get hurt, and if you float or fly even better, but even if you plunge for miles it's a great experience.

Just wait until you recognize you are dreaming.

Powerful lucid dreams are so intense that it's impossible to take in 7 or 8 really potent ones: one very good one at a time is enough to experience, in my view. You could maybe do 5 'mild' ones in a night, but I doubt if I could handle more than one powerful lucid dream per night: it would be too mind-blowing.

I hope yoou experience a lucid dream before long or at some stage.
