This is a textbook description of sleep paralysis. It can be a frightening experience, but it is not dangerous. Your body is paralyzed during REM sleep so your don't move around and act out your dreams. If you become conscious, you can feel the paralysis. The accompanying hallucinations are always similar to what you describe.
You can use this as a gateway to lucid dreaming, if you get it often. Just stay relaxed, remind yourself you are dreaming, and try to slip back into a dream.
