      shrooms disrupting dreams?

Ever since I first tried magic mushrooms (new years) I have had serious difficulty remaining lucid or even attaining my lucidity. I was a natural and didn't have to rely much on any kind of techniques and now I'm afraid I might have to. I admit I was spoiled and lazy.
It's very frustrating. Most of my dreams now make no sense and don't go along my normal story line. When I do become somewhat lucid I'm actually confused and freaked out and can't make any sense of what is going on, and I quickly lose all of the dream. It's like the shrooms fried my 'dream mind'. Hopefully I can fix this by upping my game.

Has anything similar happened to anyone?

The most important thing is you should stop taking shrooms if are still on them. I looked for common side effects of "magic mushrooms" and i did not find anything helpful. A side effect that might be disrupting the dreams is just short term memory loss and difficulty concentrating. I'd hope this would be an effect that would die out in a month or two though. Im not really a doctor so i can't say if these effect will die out, or if they will at all.

According to erowid one of the negative effects is working memory disruption (reduced ability to do tasks requiring current remembering and attention).

Hallucinogenic psilocybin is known to alter the subjective experience of time. However, there is no study that systematically investigated objective measures of time perception under psilocybin. Therefore, we studied dose-dependent effects of the serotonin (5-HT)2A/1A receptor agonist psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) on temporal processing, employing tasks of temporal reproduction, sensorimotor synchronization and tapping tempo. To control for cognitive and subjective changes, we assessed spatial working memory and conscious experience. Twelve healthy human volunteers were tested under placebo, medium (115 microg/kg), and high (250 microg/kg) dose conditions, in a double-blind experimental design. Psilocybin was found to significantly impair subjects' ability to (1) reproduce interval durations longer than 2.5 sec, (2) to synchronize to inter-beat intervals longer than 2 sec and (3) caused subjects to be slower in their preferred tapping rate. These objective effects on timing performance were accompanied by working-memory deficits and subjective changes in conscious state, namely increased reports of 'depersonalization' and 'derealization' phenomena including disturbances in subjective 'time sense.' Our study is the first to systematically assess the impact of psilocybin on timing performance on standardized measures of temporal processing. Results indicate that the serotonin system is selectively involved in duration processing of intervals longer than 2 to 3 seconds and in the voluntary control of the speed of movement. We speculate that psilocybin's selective disruption of longer intervals is likely to be a product of interactions with cognitive dimensions of temporal processing - presumably via 5-HT2A receptor stimulation.

I tried shrooms a couple of times and it doesn't sound familiar, but I must admit during that time I wasn't really paying much attention to my dreams yet. As far as I know they don't have any long term side effects as long as you are mentally healthy and stable. The concentration issues happen during a trip and not so much after. Obviously though, if you're worried (or frustrated), don't try them again and see if it changes back. You could try telling yourself you will have 'normal' dreams again, as it may even be a subconscious thing.

I've eaten a pretty large number of mushrooms, and fried myself on massive doses of acid. I haven't noticed any effect on my dreams. Though, I guess it's not impossible that you would.

Ah, well I don't know what it would be then. I've never heard of people not having dreams from psychedelics before.

I'm pretty sure no effects of magic mushrooms are permanent, as long as you haven't been on them for a very long time. In your case, since you've been on them for such a short period, just give it some time and everything will go back to normal, so long as you don't use any other mind-altering substances.

I know this sounds very patronising and whatever but... this is one of the reasons why you shouldn't do drugs.

Yes, that does sound patronizing. This trivial effect is a pretty poor excuse to try to tell someone not to drugs, especially shrooms, which are completely harmless. As you said, the effect will go away eventually if the OP doesn't keep doing them.

Ahh shrooms, the awake lucid dreaming experiance. If anything shrooms would make it easier for your brain to create visualiations and audio for your dreams, however, upon sleeping it off, you won't remember any of the dreaming, the awake hours yes, but shrooms affect your conscious more then anything.

Edit: But yea, as I said in another post somewhere. One of my DC's said I shouldn't do drugs and try to lucid dream. Makes it harder or something of the sort.

I've done shrooms and other things in the past and have just recently learned to lucid dream. Psychedelics only stay in your system for a few days, so I don't know why you'd be having trouble now. It's probably just in your head.

Hell, I drank heavily last night and had a lucid dream this morning. Just give it some time. The brain is very plastic.

The government is full of shit, by the way. Most illegal drugs are less harmful and less addictive than alcohol and tobacco.
