      I'm worried

Hi dreaming buddies. I first discovered lucid dreaming years ago when my friend told me about it unfortunately I was very young so I didn't really get it and kind of forgot. I re discovered it last Easter and was really excited about my journey into my dreams. However it has been nearly a year now since I started trying and have only had about three lucid dreams! From what I understand everyone appears to take there own time to develop the ability of lucid dreaming I just want to know if you think it's uncommon to have so few in so long and if I may be doing something wrong or if my mind just isn't used to this yet.
      Thanks in advance,
      MZ.

Best advice I can give is don't give up and stay consistent! That is, just keep trying. Although, I would also suggest you shake things up a bit. Try a new technique, and keep at it for a while. Or, if you've been putting all you can into it, take a break. And remember everyone has the power to lucid dream, it's harder for some than others, but everyone can do it.

Another thing I would suggest is taking up meditation. There are tutorials on this site which will get you started on that.

You might want to also try to start practicing All Day Awareness (ADA). There's a great tutorial here: http://www.dreamviews.org/f49/all-da...gyoshi-113253/

I have been at this for almost a full year now, and have had maybe 4 decent lucid dreams, 2 were kinda short.

Don't compare yourself to other people. I did and it got me nowhere. It doesn't help but make you feel sad if you are falling behind- but you wouldn't be falling behind if you didn't care to compare the lucids.
Just go at your own pace and reel them in. They will happen eventually. Think of it being better and more worth it once you finally get them. It's like being someone who worked for his money, looking at a guy who inherited it all in one go. You feel a little jealous, but at the end of the day you feel better about how you got them.

May I ask what technique you are using? Also, how much effort are you putting into it? The first few months I started lucid dreaming, I slacked off and forgot to do reality checks and that only wound up hurting my chances of getting lucid. Then I got annoyed and quit, getting back into it a few months after that. I'm glad you've managed to perservere, though. Don't stop, just keep working hard and you'll get better. It's like learning any other skill, like, say, piano. If you don't practice then you won't improve. Good luck getting lucid again.

I've been using a mixed technique of reality checking and all day awareness. I have been quite consistent throughout the year except when I have had some pretty important exams.

Another good thing to remember is the learning curve isn't consistent for everybody, or even one person.
You might get a good start and get an LD in the first week, and then get loads of them off the back of that one, or you could keep trying really hard for months and seemingly get nowhere.

It's either one or the other. Progress is progress, results mean very little unless they are consistent. If you get some consistently then you know you are on to a winner of a technique. If you try one method and get one lucid but then nothing for ages, then it was a fluke and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it "failing" afterwards- truth is it never worked for you in the first place.

As everyone else said, stay positive and keep trying.

I second what Avalanche said, you might think that you're finally getting somewhere and then suddenly there'll be a big long dry spell.. But don't worry, those always end if you just keep trying. Another random tip, which worked pretty well for me, was to just change where I sleep. Sleep somewhere unusual or unfamiliar once in a while. A good one is usually a nap on the couch, or even on the floor. I read somewhere here that this works because the unfamiliarity of sleeping in that place causes you to sleep lighter and therefore have a better chance of lucid dreaming.
