Good you don't have to use reality checks because your awareness of the dream itself is enough to become aware of what is going on.
Although if you want to make the dream stable, you first of all need to stop reacting on instincts like we all do in dreams, I still have some problem with it from time to time.
But since it sometimes is impossible to solve with the lack of dreaming awareness, the best thing to do is to relay on your intent. You do that by reminding yourself and making it a habit to remind yourself "When I am lucid I will make tons of reality checks, lick the floor, touch an object" Hehe what ever you want to do to try to stabilize the dream.
With instincts I mean that you are aware of dreaming, but you still consider dream things as important. Like in some of my dreams I still believe that if I see my dad, he IS my dad.
If you get too excited and wake up the answer is simple but boring...
Keep practicing until you don't get excited anymore it happens believe me.
Good luck
