      Frightening Pre-Lucid Dreaming Experiences

I don't know how long I've actually been lucid dreaming. The first time I remember doing it consciously had to have been about 8 years ago, and it has been randomly and sporadically since, with several periods where lucid dreams, as well as simply vivid dreams, were clustered (January to March 2009 was the most intense, with a vivid/lucid dream occurring once every three days a week at one point).

So, naturally I became interested in trying to control these experiences since I seem to be so natured with lucid dreams. But I quickly found something rather sinister- although I have successfully lucid dreamed many times, I often fail quite catastrophically because, before hitting the dream itself, I get a high heart rate, ears begin ringing, and sleep paralysis occurs. Nothing new, except my mad mind then creates a very dark hallucination- that I'm being surrounded and abducted by classic Grey aliens. At which point, I immediately shoot back to consciousness (although, sometimes, I do dream, and the dream tends to be typical "Abduction" lore.)

Anyway I can overcome this, or is this... *gulp* Is this actually happening??? Because, for me, one out of three lucid dreams go this way and is actually beginning to discourage me from lucid dreaming. (Probably doesn't help in that I am a registered UFO fanatic)

Ah, this is a common feature of sleep paralysis. Many people experience strange/scary visions during this phase. Ignore them, don't focus on them. Allow them to pass by, and become a distant feature. Remember, YOU are giving them power by being scared. Focus on the dream you want to enter, and the unpleasant images will soon subside. Feel free to have a look through the "Attaining Lucidity" section on this site. There are some threads which contain information relevent to your query.
      All the best, Harris

The threatening presence is a classic symptom of SP. I have had SP only twice in my life, both times upon waking up, not falling asleep. And in one of my SPs I was surrounded by aliens - the classic alien abduction thing. But it's just a hallucination. Just as the ringing or any other sensations or sounds or visions you may have. BTW, the auditory, visual and tactile hallucinations (HH) are not part of SP, but normal falling asleep process.

The more you think abut it, better you will remember it when this happens next time, so you will know it's just a hallucination and you can use it to your advantage to lucid dream. I know it's not easy, but if you are able to get over the fear and stick with it, you have a good chance to enter a lucid dream.

When this happens, don't struggle to wake up or move. Instead, stay calm and visualize your happy lucid dream. But if you like to break the SP, try to change the way you are breathing at that time. That will give your body a signal, that you are awake ant it will end the SP. Another method is to start moving your toes or fingers.

We do get in SP (REM attonia) every night, so we don't act out our dreams. But it starts only after we start dreaming and by then we are already asleep and don't notice it. For some people, maybe not always, just sometimes, this get's a little screwed up and SP kicks in sooner than it should, or it stays active, after you have woken up.

      Hope this helps. Happy dreams

Huh. Well I just discovered something odd. I tried lucid dreaming last night- except I covered my head with the pillow. When the Greys appeared again, my brain soon "corrected" itself, I suppose saying "You nob. There's no way you can see them. A pillow's in front of your face." I guess this is the way it happens, since I eyes tend to flutter open right before dreaming.

      Worked like a charm.

I heard a loud static screaming noise, saw an old Islamic man, and then hear a dog panting at the foot of my bed.

Last night, I witnessed stuff like this:

Now I'm not easily scared by things, but warped, simple, bulging faces somehow panic and scare me. And I really do experience FEAR..
